LIAO YIBAI - NEW YORK

Yibai's first experience tasting an American hamburger as a child is one of his most enduring memories. While attending school at the military factory, Yibai and his classmates were taught one English word a day. One day, the word was "hamburger," however, the teacher was not able to explain what it was beyond a symbol of American "decadence". The father of one classmate was going to America, so the students begged him to bring back an actual hamburger. Initially he was reluctant as he was traveling under the auspices of the Chinese government. However, when he returned, he gathered the children, shut all the windows and doors, and clandestinely pulled an envelope stamped "Top Secret" from his briefcase. From inside he pulled a five day old, greasy, American, hamburger. (At the time it took five days to travel between China and the US). Tasting it, the first student screwed up his face and declared it "Gross and Horrible". Nevertheless Yibai and his classmates all tried part of the completely rancid burger.
Growing up, Yibai's favorite dog, Manman would fight every dog it encountered. Recently Yibai visited Hong Kong's Disneyland and waited in line with his daughter to meet Mickey Mouse. For much of his life, Mickey Mouse was taught to be a major example of American culture's decadence. While greeting Mickey Mouse, Yibai noticed the figure threw a long shadow. In "Fighting Shadow", Yibai uses these two figures to represent the futility of fighting and creating enemies by showing Manman stabbing his shadow with a spear. However instead of mirroring his figure, the shadow reflects Mickey Mouse's shape.
Yibai's father worked for 40 years in a confidential military factory as an engineer of long-range cruise missiles. Believing that the USA was imminently preparing to fire on China, the Communists decided that for every one missile the Americans sent to China, they would reciprocate by firing ten missiles back. Yibai small missile sculptures are intended to be sold to the American public, thereby coming full circle from the intention of his father's lifetime work. Instead they serve as an indication that the enmity between the two countries is now over, and confidentiality should be eliminated between them.

1969/2009: from Futurist Moon to Explorer Art
Conquest for Numerical Exploration of Stage and ScreenOn the night of 20 to 21 July 2009 at 3:56 (French time), I will make an appointment in space and time - a Conquest for Numerical Exploration of Stage and Screen - for Internet on-line platform (room 27) on SELFWORLD founded by Ivan Chabanaud.
After releasing a streaming audio-video in real time from an aircraft in flight between Shanghai and Munich in December 2005 "From Scenography to Planetary Network" with "From Futurist Moon to Explorer Art", this is today a new setting things back to zero away from the limits of what is known.
This event is not a copy of the Cirque Calder, or my Container Theater in 1998, but it is a model that was also thought to be connected to the Internet, inspired by the words that I projected on the screen of the Montparnasse Tower in Paris in 2004, "Mobile Wireless Digital".
By coordinating the exhibition on scenographer Jacques Polieri in Paris in 2002 and Berlin in 2003, I was able to present his model in relation to the conquest of space, cosmic as well as scenic. Now I've concluded that there can be no new languages without a temporal written form as a primary consideration for experimenting with space itself. (**)
One hundred years after the manifesto of Futurism, I play with the "art of silence" (*). The so-called "technological arts" have come of age, forty years after McLuhan's theories in relation to electronic communications along with the first steps of man on the moon. We are now entering into a "digital atmosphere" that has nothing to do with the past.
Before my upcoming publication-performance-installation "00/00" in Paris, to close my triptych "1957/2007: from Sputnik Satellite to Explorer Art" and "1958/2008: from Philips Pavillon to Explorer Art" you can participate in "From Futurist Moon to Explorer Art".
I invite you as a space tourist to experience, instead of the absence of gravity, an amusing discovery and, perhaps, to leave your mark on my work, which is also a break from definite space. As Pascale did not say, "facing the eternal silence of these defined spaces which frighten us no more".
"From Futurist Moon to Explorer Art" selfworld is connected to a wireless IP camera, with different scenery available, directly from the planet Mars taken by NASA robots (***) and characters that I can animate at the time of your choice.
By purchasing a character in this work, representative of the cosmonauts, you become an actor Futurist, Marswalker, Explorer, Artist, etc., depending on your institutional support or private finances.
The pieces in this game are set in a black cube type flightcase. The entire architecture of this "Little Cosmic Theater" is available for exhibition performances in museums and galleries. This gesture is an amusing but radically critical opening to imagine real interconnections between the arts.

Voghera 11 ArtGallery, in occasione del quarantesimo anniversario dello sbarco lunare (impresa dell' Apollo 11) presenterà il noto quadro “LUNA 57" dell'eclettico artista Roberto Pattina che anticipando tutti i mezzi di comunicazione ha "regalato" le prime immagini lunari.
Luna 57 rappresenta l'incipit del Manifesto dell' astralismo di cui Roberto Pattina è il fondatore. L'esposizione dunque è un omaggio ad un grande artista e ad una grande opera.
La data di apertura avverrà in concomitanza con il giorno più importante dell'umanità:
21 luglio 09 alle ore 18.30. L'esposizione proseguirà fino alla fine del mese.

Nel 1957, alcuni mesi prima del lancio del SATELLITE, in occasione di una mostra personale a Marina di Carrara, lanciammo il 1° programma dell’”ASTALISMO “ diffuso oralmente all’eterogeneo pubblico formato da poeti, marinai, artisti, pescatori, filosofi, pensatori. Nel febbraio del 59 in una intervista concessa alla R.A.I. rilasciammo i punti fondamentali della pittura “atomica -astrale” i cui cardini furono trasmessi alle ore 12,45 sul T.G. del 13-12-1959-FI-2. A quasi a tre anni di distanza diffondiamo la III edizione dell’ASTRALISMO.
1) l’ arte è la proiezione dell’ EPOCA. L’epoca è oggi “ atomica- astrale “ L’arte è atomica-astrale.
2) Con il radar della fantasia realizzeremo colori astrali prima sconosciuti
3) Useremo tutte le tecniche che l’arte astratta ci ha trasmesso , ma noi non consideriamo lo SPERIMENTALISMO come fine a se stesso. La tecnica è mezzo dell’arte.

Mary Anne Kluth and Laurel Roth: Theory of the Unforeseen

Laurel Roth and Mary Anne Kluth are both fascinated by the process author Michael Pollan describes as "reductive science".
Roth's new works will examine the ways that science has enabled industrialized farming to manipulate humanity's place in a larger ecosystem. Using hardwoods carved and polished by hand to a perfect Brancusi-like finish, she meticulously recreates the largely unseen remains of food animals such as cows and pigs. Embellished with Swarovski crystals, and presented like relics, these bones celebrate the very evidence of selective breeding omitted in discussions of the current system of food consumption in the United States.
Kluth's new paintings will depict the dissonant relationship between humanity and landscape that can result when one focuses too closely on empirical perceptions. Contrasting loose, spontaneous mark-making with obsessive techniques and photo-realist depiction, the resulting images will relate the tragic romanticism of radio astronomers, individuals that spend their lives staring at computer models of places and events impossible to directly experience.
Both artists are interested in the ways people attempt to articulate a human niche in the cosmos, and the human strategies that both propel and foil that endeavor.

About Ashley Collins:
From sleeping on concrete studio floors to breaking price point records for living female contemporary painters, Ashley Collins has produced a diverse composition of works, which can be found with collectors ranging from Robert Redford to Sally Horchow, from Kate Capshaw to Gianluca Galtrucco, Ringo Starr to George Rosenthal, Blythe Danner Paltrow to Holly Hunt, Danny Sullivan III to the Sultan of Brunei. Currently buyers of Collins’ work are comprised of both sophisticated contemporary collectors adding to their collections of Rothenberg, Graham, Ruscha, Francis, Goode, and Rauschenberg, among others, and high net worth individuals that are simply drawn to the work. The resin which Collins’ moves across the work with fire from a torch not only provides a protective coating, but also aids in viewing the depth of layers. Many works have in excess of 30 or more layers –the amount of time that goes into each piece is simply astonishing.
Initially, the sheer scale of her works is overwhelming, particularly given Collins 5’3” frame. Collins’ series of 8’ x10’ paintings, “Portrait Series” amplifies the faces of horses to mythic proportions. Her series of 7’ x 8’ and 8 x 10’ abstract works are so layered as to create a constant invitation to the viewer to find anew with each viewing some piece of the puzzle. Collins’ work “Lass” has a repeated text that perhaps describes her work best: “I have spent most of my adult years erasing the layers of reality that covered the beautiful truths of childhood.”

Sasha Blanton’s battleships situated nowhere symbolize the future of North American culture with regards to our global position. As stated by the artist, “we are rusting out, left to crumble – we are sinking.”
Whereas Kevin Bourgeois’s surrealistic pop inspired graphite drawings address the human conditions of truth, beauty and love in our consumer driven society.
Abby Hertz’s stylized drawings based on female genitalia are a contemporary take on feminism. In “Covered” the sinuous vaginal lines evoke the tendrils of arboreal landscapes, buried beneath the soil - she uncovers their potency.
In addition, Melissa Murray’s drawings of animals in incongruous settings represent the detachment humans have from our primal origins. In her own words, “these creatures represent purity, and personify my dreams and fears for our collective future.”
For Eric Johnston ghost stories mingle with memories of the Texas marshland where he grew up and morph themselves into visionary designs. In “A People’s Power Plant” Johnston transforms an archetypal Baltimore dwelling and attaches to it multiple solar panels creating an imaginary structure and the possibilities of hybridization.
Joseph Smolinksi’s graphite drawings examine the interaction between one of the oldest
living organisms on earth and its current nemesis cellular towers. In the vast landscapes of this country where are confronted with the irreverence commercial society has for the integral process of life and death.

Exposición colectiva mostrada en el MUAC (Museo universitario de Arte Contemporáneo) en México, DF. 
Petit Mal es un término neurológico el cual refiere a la breve interrupción de las funciones cerebrales causadas por una actividad eléctrica anómala. Así fue nombrada esta exposición por la naturaleza de sus piezas que consisten en instalaciones dinámicas, como máquinas, robots, videos, cables que mandan señales y activan elementos de las piezas.

Petit Mal is a neurological term that refers to a brief interruption of brain functions due an abnormal electric activity. This is the name given to this exhibition because of the nature of the pieces shown here such as dynamic installations like machines, robots, videos, cables that send signals and make some elements of these pieces move.

Une exposition collective au MUAC (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo universitario), à Mexico.
Petit Mal est un terme neurologique qui fait référence à une brève interruption des fonctions du cerveau en raison d'une anomalie de l'activité électrique. C'est le nom donné à cette exposition en raison de la nature des pièces présentées ici comme la dynamique des installations comme des machines, des robots, des vidéos, des câbles de signaux et de faire certains éléments de ces pièces se déplacer.

ZHANG O - VANCOUVER
The Vancouver Art Gallery will launch its new outdoor exhibition space, Offsite, with a site-specific installation by Chinese artist O Zhang from July 20 to November 29, 2009.
O Zhang’s major photographic installation Horizon (Sky) will be presented. For this project, the artist returned to the rural area of her youth in central China to photograph the young village girls who live there. Posing in front of a camera for the first time, the children stare into the lens, returning the gaze of the viewer—unabashed, bold and powerful—while the vibrant colour of the blue sky behind them evokes thoughts of hope and possibility. Enlarged to monumental proportions, the images of the young girls, each photographed on a country hillside, are presented with a strength and individuality not commonly represented in popular media. Zhang’s images suggest a positive vision of the future of China and the role that women might play in its transformation, a role that is simultaneously embraced by the artist herself.
