ROBERTO FARRIOL - OTTAWA

SAW Video and Gallery 101 are pleased to present international Chilean Artist Roberto Farriol for his first video screening in Ottawa. Roberto will hold an artist's talk on MIGRATION and the immigrant experience. While in Canada, Roberto will conduct a series of interviews with immigrants in order to produce a video that provides a glimpse into the immigrant perspective and how being a foreigner implies peering in from a distance. Some of Farriol's recent video works include 2 segundos de amor convertidos en 1 minuto, an exploration on the theme of romance by way of television and its soap operas, and J.L. (sobre paisaje), a narrative based on digital collage about landscape and unity.

Biography:
Roberto Farriol is the Director of the Department of Fine Arts, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, and a contemporary Chilean artist based in Santiago. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Panthéon, Sorbonne, Paris, and has participated in numerous exhibitions in Chile and internationally since 1971. Currently working towards a PhD in Fine Arts from the Universidad Politécnia de Valencia, Farriol examines the origins of video art in Chile.

SAW Vidéo et la Galerie 101 sont heureux d’accueillir l’artiste chilien de réputation internationale, Roberto Farriol, qui présentera, pour la première fois à Ottawa, une projection vidéo. Roberto tiendra une causerie sur MIGRATION et parlera de la vie des immigrants. Pendant son séjour au Canada, Roberto réalisera une série d’entrevues avec des immigrants qui servira ensuite à la production d’une vidéo mettant en lumière leurs points de vue, et qui montrera que l’étranger se voit souvent obligé d’observer les autres en conservant une certaine distance. Parmi les œuvres vidéo récentes de Farriol, notons 2 segundos de amor convertidos en 1 minuto, une exploration du thème de la romance par le biais de la télévision et des feuilletons télévisés, et J.L. (sobre paisaje), un récit basé sur un collage numérique portant sur le paysage et l’unité.

Biographie:
Artiste contemporain du Chili basé à Santiago, Roberto Farriol est directeur du Département des beaux-arts de la Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. Il est titulaire d’une maîtrise en beaux-arts du Panthéon, Sorbonne, Paris, et il a participé à plusieurs expositions au Chili et à l’étranger. Présentement, Farriol poursuit des études doctorales en beaux-arts de la Universidad Politécnia de Valencia portant sur les origines de l’art de la vidéo au Chili.

Nt art gallery is very pleased to present Vladimir Nikolic’s first solo exhibition in Italy, which opens on 29 April, 2009.

The show gathers together the Serbian artist’s most recent productions, namely a series of four works whose chronological order is made explicit through the conversations of two fictional characters, who explore the images in a TV-like commentary. By making clear reference to the aesthetics of certain twentieth-century art movements, Nikolic stages situations that uncover, problematize, and question his relationship to this unavoidable legacy. Land Art (2009), Performance (2009), and Installation (2009) are, indeed, the genres naming the three works realized by the artist; the first is a photo picturing a mountain that – as we find out through the audio commentaries – is the result of an exhausting performance, whereby the artist has apparently changed the original landscape by moving a large amount of snow from one point to another; the last two are black-and-white videos which document the artist’s studio activities: sort of private performances, where neither success nor failure seem to be at stake. Simple and heroic actions are used as pretexts to trigger a discussion about contemporary art between the two commentators. The dialogues were written by Nikolic himself, unveiling a sort of inner debate that point out the complexities and dilemmas involved in producing an artwork. All the questions raised, both personal and generic, tend to remain unanswered, nevertheless tracing an engaging narrative structure that directs the audience’s vision. In contrast to this, Painting (2009), the fourth work of the series, has no audio and the viewer is left in front of the artist’s construction of geometric bi-dimensional images. A highly recognizable, although new and accidental, aesthetic continuously generates new associations and references, in an obsessive loop from which seems not possible to escape.

La nt art gallery è lieta di presentare la prima personale Italiana di Vladimir Nikolic, che aprirà il 29 Aprile 2009.
La mostra raccoglie la produzione più recente dell’artista Serbo, che consiste in una serie di quattro opere il cui ordine cronologico è reso esplicito nelle conversazioni di due cronisti immaginari, che li interpretano in una sorta di commento televisivo. Dichiarando le referenze alle estetiche di certi movimenti artistici del ventesimo scorso, Nikolic mette in scena situazioni che svelano, problematizzano e si interrogano su questa eredità in qualche modo inevitabile. Site-Specific (2009), Performance (2009) e Sculpture (2009) sono, infatti, i generi che danno il nome a tre dei lavori realizzati. Il primo è la foto di paesaggio di montagna che - come scopriamo dall’audio che la commenta – è il risultato di una performance estenuante, in cui apparentemente l´artista ha modificato il paesaggio originario spostando una grande quantità di neve da un punto ad un altro. Gli ultimi due sono video in bianco e nero che documentano le attività di studio dell’artista: performances private, in cui la riuscita o il fallimento dell’esercizio non sembrano essere importanti. Azioni semplici ed eroiche diventano in questo modo un pretesto per scatenare una discussione sull’arte contemporanea tra i due commentatori. I dialoghi, scritti dallo stesso Nikolic, svelano una sorta di dibattito interno che mette in luce le complessità ed i dilemmi legati alla produzione di un’opera. Tutte le domande sollevate, siano esse personali o generali, tendono a rimanere senza risposta, ma riescono comunque a tracciare una struttura narrativa accattivante che guida la visione dello spettatore. Quasi a fare da contrappunto, Abstract Video (2009), il quarto video della serie, non ha audio ed il pubblico è lasciato di fronte alla costruzione di immagini raffiguranti geometrie bidimensionali. Un’estetica altamente riconoscibile, sebbene nuova e casuale, che genera continuamente nuove associazioni e referenze in un loop ossessivo da cui non sembra esserci via d’uscita.

ERIC GODIN
Dessinateur éditorial, peintre et illustrateur.

Qu’ils s’intéressent ou non aux arts visuels, les Québécois qui connaissent Eric Godin sont nombreux. Dessinateur éditorial au journal Voir de Montréal pendant plus de dix ans ( De 1988 à 1999), il a marqué par ses dessins grinçants et exceptionnellement justes et lucides notre réalité socio-politique, comme peu d’autres peuvent le revendiquer.

Son association avec le réseau de télévision TVA entre 1999 et 2001 avec les capsules quotidiennes Le petit dessin de Godin – toujours comme dessinateur éditorial – a aussi été déterminante dans la reconnaissance de son travail. Il a également collaboré à des publications telles que La Presse, Reader’s Digest et a été le premier dessinateur-éditorial au Québec à présenter son travail quotidiennement sur le web dans l’environnement Sympatico en 1997. Il a été directeur artistique du quotidien La Tribune (Gesca) de Sherbrooke entre 2003 et 2005. Il y a créé un hebdomadaire culturel, Tribu, et participé à la création du mensuel pour ados Genre.

Eric Godin se nourrit littéralement de communication et de conception, sources intarissables d’inspiration depuis 25 ans. Peintre, illustrateur, dessinateur-éditorial, et directeur artistique, ses créations se retrouvent tant dans des collections privées au Québec, au Canada et aux USA que dans différents Fonds au Musée McCord de Montréal, à la Bibliothèque Nationale du Québec qu’aux Archives Nationales à Ottawa qui possèdent à eux trois plus de 2000 originaux.

Il a conçu, depuis 1984, de nombreuses affiches et illustrations marquantes que ce soit pour Le tour de l’île de Montréal, le Théâtre d’aujourd’hui, la Fête Nationale du Québec, Bell, Hydro-Québec, Juste pour rire, etc. Son personnage à quatre poils, Pinhead, a eu droit à une rétrospective au Musée Juste pour rire en 2001 pour souligner ses 15 ans.

Depuis six ans, il illustre quelques jeux du populaire jeu télévisé L’union fait la force sur les ondes de Radio-Canada. Il collabore au mensuel Jobboom depuis septembre 2008 avec un dessin d’humour portant sur le monde du travail. Tout en développant quelques projets personnels (Livres, télé, expositions), il réalise différents projets imprimés en tant que directeur artistique.

Eric Godin est membre de la FPJQ (La Fédération professionnelle des journalistes du Québec), de l’UDA (L’union des artistes) et de la CAEC (L’Association canadienne des dessinateurs éditoriaux).

Die Ausstellung „Deuce“ präsentiert 7 internationale künstlerische Positionen im Spannungsfeld zwischen Malerei und Zeichnung. „Zeichner malen - Maler zeichnen“ beschreibt dabei eher die fließenden, immer noch stets neu zu verhandelnden Grenzen zwischen den beiden Feldern als dass einer klaren Kategorisierung folgend, bestimmte Künstler einem spezifischen Medium zugerechnet werden oder eine Spezifik des Malerischen oder Zeichnerischen an einzelnen Künstlern exemplifiziert werden soll. Alle Künstler sind gleichermaßen sowohl mit Gemälden wie auch Arbeiten auf Papier in der Ausstellung präsent: Somit eröffnet sich dem Betrachter eine spannende Situation des vergleichenden Schauens im Blick auf Differenzen und Gemeinsamkeiten in der Behandlung von Material und Oberflächen bei gleichen Sujets.

Farbe, Fläche und Lineatur im Dialog miteinander, mal dominiert das eine, über das andere Ausdrucksmittel, stehen sich die Gestaltungsstrategien gegenüber, unentschieden, Kopf an Kopf. Wann wird die Linie zur Malerei, die Farbspur zur zeichnerischen Markierung?

Darüber hinaus schafft die Ausstellung - jenseits einer rein medialen Fragestellung, ob nun auf Leinwand oder Papier – im weitesten Sinne eine Begegnung gestischer Expressivität mit künstlerischen Ansätzen, die auf die Beruhigung und Ausbalancierung der Bildmittel setzen, treffen apollinische und dionysische Prinzipien aufeinander.

Frank Badurs (*1944) Leinwände sind reine Malerei, geometrisch geordnete Farbklänge. Sie verzichten im Unterschied zu den Papierarbeiten auf die Verwendung des Grids, jenes so typischen Gestaltungsmittels des Künstler, das zur Rhythmisierung und als kontrapunktische Strategie zu Farbe und Fläche eingesetzt wird. Hier herrscht eine geometrisch klare Übersichtlichkeit. Maß und Proportion von Feldern und Streifen, die unterschiedlicher Temperaturen gehorchen. Auf dem Papier dagegen: frei vibrierende und streng geometrische Lineaturen im Wechselchorus.

The exhibition "Deuce" presents 7 international artistic positions in the field of tension between painting and drawing. "Drawers paint – painters draw" refers more to the flowing, constantly renegotiable boundaries between the two fields rather than a clear categorization that assigns particular artists to a specific medium or that exemplifies specific features of paintings or drawings with individual artists. All artists are represented in the exhibition both by paintings and works on paper: this allows the viewer an exciting situation of the comparative view in looking at differences and similarities in the treatment of materials and surfaces with the same subjects.

Colour, surface and lines in dialogue with each other, sometimes one dominating the other, means of expression; the composition strategies facing each other, undecided. When does the line become painting, the trace of colour become a mark in a drawing?

In addition, the exhibition creates - beyond the mere issue of media, whether on canvas or paper - in the broadest sense an encounter of gestural expressivity with artistic approaches that rely on the calming and balancing of the image components; Apolline and Dionysian principles meet.

You and a guest are cordially invited** to the opening reception of At Variance.

The transitory concept of ‘Place’ is explored in the three-person exhibition, At Variance. Using the notion of the landscape as a point of departure, Marcy Adzich, Christine Cheung, and Beth Howe explore contradictory ideas of space.

Adzich develops sculptural objects that reference man-made and natural environments, evoking a sense of isolation and dislocation, while Cheung paints the space where one’s consciousness and dreams become slowly intertwined. Through sculpture built from a decidedly ubiquitous and urban material—office photocopy paper—Howe dismantles the way the built environment dictates our travel paths. The imagined and the real collide in this exhibition, creating an alternate sense of place.

Exhibition runs from May 15 to June 18, 2009.

Opening reception is May 15 @ 8 pm.

**The reception is open to members and invited guests; artists will be in attendance. The exhibition will be open to the public, and admission is free.

What is Postmodernity? Is it the abandonment of the ‘grand narratives’ of Modernity? Is it a neo-conservative threat to the Enlightenment Project? Is it, according to Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, a global state of schizophrenia – complete with wasps, orchids, black holes, flying bricks and bodies-without-organs? How does Nicolas Bourriaud use these ideas to theorise aesthetics as a system of relations and, more recently, Altermodernism? Come discover answers, to these questions and more, in an engaging introduction to the End of History! Accompanied by an live artistic performance by Emma Bennett.
