David Revere McFadden is Chief Curator and Vice President for Programs and Collections at the Museum of Arts ½ Design in New York City. He served as Curator of Decorative Arts and Assistant Director for Collections and Research at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution from 1978 to 1995. For six years, he served as President of the International Council of Museums’ Decorative Arts and Design Committee. McFadden has organized over 150 exhibitions on decorative arts, design, and craft, covering developments from the ancient world to the present day, has published more than 100 catalogues, essays, and reviews, has served as a juror and guest curator across the United States, and has lectured extensively. McFadden has been awarded the Presidential Design Award three times, and has been honored with knighthoods from Sweden, Finland, and France. This Spring, CCA and experimental theatre group Suspect Culture present new collaboration, Stage Fright, an exhibition exploring the nature of theatricality.
The artists in the show, from theatre and visual arts backgrounds, are Nick Powell and Jonny Dawe (working collaboratively as OSKAR), David Greig, Luke Collins, Dan Rebellato, Patrick Macklin, Graham Eatough, and Sharon Smith and Felicity Croydon (working collaboratively as Max Factory).
In the exhibition, the artists come together to explore the meaning of theatricality in their different fields. Within the visual arts the term ‘theatrical’ has often been used to denigrate an artwork – it somehow seems to lack ‘authenticity’. In the theatre world, ‘theatricality’ is viewed as a more positive agent – it creates a mental space where the imagination is freed and anything is possible. More recently there has been a noticeable trend to rethink the idea of the theatrical in the visual arts. Perhaps marking a shift away from the strict conceptualism of the past, many artists have embraced the potential of theatre, acting and set design.
In Stage Fright each artist has produced work that tests the idea of theatricality within the framework of a gallery, where emphasis is often placed as much on the power of the object as on the ideas at play in an exhibition. Among the many works, Nick Powell and Jonny Dawe test the perceptual shifts created by a mechanised series of stage backdrops. David Greig makes visible the slow tangential process of writing, drawing it out in real time with all its pauses, empty moments, erasures and final drafts. Luke Collins, meanwhile, records the rehearsal process for a work in the making.

No Man’s Land is defined as an unoccupied area, land that is unowned and uninhabited (and possibly undesirable) and the ambiguous region between two categories or states or conditions (usually containing some features of both) where there is still a twilight zone, the tantalizing occurrences that are probably noise but might possibly be a signal.
Paul Virilio’s Dromology, whereby the increasing velocity of our global culture is driven by advances in technology and military innovation, suggests that reality is no longer defined by time and space. The high speed and seamless stream of culture that blurs experience allowing little or no opportunity to pause brings into existence the paradox of being everywhere at the same time and also being nowhere at all. A simple binary equation of reality and representation is no longer sufficient to decipher what we perceive.
In The Art of Travel, Alain de Botton echoes the correlation between what we experience and perceive and how this dominates our thought processes. He notes that journeys into expansive, alien or uninhabited spaces can bring about the opportunity for uninhibited reflection. “Large thoughts emerge from large views and new thoughts from new places”. All the works selected for this exhibition establish a littoral space, the region between high and low tide, or in-between space through contrast, defamiliarization or dislocation to slow things down and present possibilities for open thought and uninhibited contemplation.

From the 19th to the 22nd of August the Indian Art Summit, India's Modern and Contemporary Art Fair, will take place in New Delhi. The organisers have had a good response from galleries in the South Asian region, the Middle East, Europe and USA, however, the response from Australian galleries has not been as strong as they hoped it would be. Although applications to exhibit at the fair have officially closed, the fair managers have decided to extend the closing date for applications for any Australian gallery until the 10th of April.
