UPSCALE - OTTAWA

La Petite Mort Gallery presents UPSCALE: Group Exhibit

One Night Only: Vernissage, Friday June 26 , 2009 / 7 - 10pm / Tunes by Big Mac Daddy
Proudly sponsored by CKCU 93.1 FM

"Upcycle"
-"The practice of taking something that is disposable and transforming it into something of greater use and value" From the book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things by William McDonough and Michael Braungart.

Elmaks, who has been drawing on walls since an early age and considers himself a devotee to the fine art of pranksterism, has been working with the concerpt of upcycling for several years. On one hand, the act can be as simple as turning discarded objects or materials into art or craft, as he has done by building jewelry boxes and miniature cabinets out of scrap wood. In another sense upcycling can be read in terms of improving or otherwise revitalizing an existing environment, as with the Swap Box Project which Elmaks has masterminded and seen become a growing global phenomenon. Drawing his construction materials from our discarded trash, to which he feels determined to grant a second and more improved life, Elmaks seeks to produce objects which are both wonderful and useful and adorn them with his own adorable-yet-macabre creations.

FEATURING ARTS/CRAFTS BY:

Lamb Rabbit Jewelery

Lamb Rabbit is a fresh new jewellery line designed and handmade by Rachel Stone. Lamb Rabbit pieces are original, one-or-few-of-a-kind, handcrafted artisan jewellery. Rachel upcycles vintage pieces and incorporates natural materials (such as semi-precious stones, bone and antler, wood, feathers, shell, coral, + more) into her jewellery. Lamb Rabbit designs frequently combine vintage elements with a woodland aesthetic to create truly unique, wearable art.

Pascale Conspiracy

Through my works, I seek to express my deepest thoughts and concerns, which often revolve around questions of religion and sexuality. My strong disinterest in “meaningless” art has pushed me to create art informed by my personal experiences, as well as my studies in political thought, religion, philosophy, and history. Driven by an undying desire to speak loudly and audibly, I will continue to yell at the top of my lungs by means of a medium that only knows the edges of the canvas as its boundaries.

Veronica Michelle

"Veronica Michelle is a multi-disciplined artist who has dabbled in drawing, writing, performance, photography and painting from a young age.

She uses bright colours and bold lines to define her subjects in simplistic terms. With a running theme of robots - some depicted with thoughts or feelings. Having spent the past several years focusing on writing as her main creative outlet, she's begun to use painting to express thoughts and feelings that can not properly be articulated, but must be interpreted through colours and shapes."
