WANT IT BAD - TORONTO

You've seen some incredibly sexy images over the last few weeks - what we like to call What Women Want.

Now, it's your chance to own pieces by some of the freshest, collectible photographers around.

Noah Kalina (NYC)

Noah first exploded across the blogosphere when he introduced his Everyday series, making him into "that YouTube guy".
Picking up speed from there, Noah's self-reflective images capture and encapsulate the themes of fleeting youth, time and space. His work has been picked up by RollingStone, Seed, ID, Interview Magazine and Esquire, just to drop a few names.

Yuri Dojc (Toronto)

The master eroticist has done and seen it all and is included in the L'espresso collection of the best nude photographers of the world along side Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe and Bill Brandt.

Diana Sheunemann (Germany)

Diana Scheunemann is in demand for advertising and editorial campaigns, as well as celebrity portraits. Diana’s spontaneous style generates an unusually idyllic view, which demonstrates her skill and experience from the flawless world of fashion photography. Fashion spreads for Vogue are just the beginning and her works for What Women Want are an incendiary experience into true female beauty and desire.

Leanne Eisen (Toronto)

Is a young, but oft celebrated photographer who has exhibited her at Toronto's Pikto Gallery and during Nuit Blanche at Gallery TPW. Most recently, Leanne won Best Still Life/Abstract at SNAP!09. Leanne's "Looking In" series is a fresh perspective in What Women Want.

Talia Shipman
(Toronto)

For someone having graduated last spring, Talia brings a whimsical, stylized maturity to her work that some photographers only dream of capturing. The young artist has already experienced her work being published and shown in galleries worldwide and Canadian Art Magazine recently named Shipman as one of Toronto’s artists to watch and with her Stripped series, she’s showing us why.

Get out your checkbooks and join us for a drink on May 4th @ 7:00pm to kick off the final week of our first exhibit at Dessinee.

If you can't make it Monday, be sure to get yourself down to the gallery before May 11th to silently bid on your favourite pieces.

Each work has a secret reserve price set by the artist. To submit a bid, a bid submission form must be complete in full with accompanying form of valid payment/deposit.
On May 11, 2009 Dessinee will award the works to the highest bidder.

We are only accept bid cancellations on submission received prior to May 10th at noon.

DENNIS OPPENHEIM - NEW YORK

Burning Contract, Splash Building
Swarm, Spiral Metamorphosis

June 4 – June 27, 2009

at the Janos Gat Gallery

195 Bowery (at Spring Street)

An exhibition of proposals for large-scale public projects by Dennis Oppenheim, the pioneering Land and Body artist. In addition to recently secured commissions in the U.S., Canada, China, and Europe, the exhibition will include Burning Contract, a large model depicting a sixty story building the idea of which is based on a rolled swirl of paperset on fire.

One featured work, titled Splash Building, depicts a giant water drop crashing into liquid, and bursting upward into a splayed cylinder, which forms the exterior structure of a forty-story building. Oppenheim refers to this piece as an “event sculpture,” having developed its form from the results of a dynamic action. The same applies to Swarm, a vortex caused by the flight path of hundreds of birds, resulting in the perfect lineal form of a six foot diameter cup and saucer, which will hang in the gallery. In another hanging work, the aptly named Spiral Metamorphosis, various imagesboats, cars and airplanes morph into their opposites sunglasses, hats, etc. over a progression of states within a spiral concourse.

Some of the projects represented in this exhibition come from a concurrent museum exhibition of Oppenheim’s work at MARTa Museum, Hereford, Germany, mounted by Jan Hoet, Director of Documenta, 1992. The exhibition at the Janos Gat Gallery will present, for the first time in the United States, the new monograph on Oppenheim’s public art projects. The 300 page book, published by Charta, Milan, includes text by Friederike Fast (Jan Hoet's Assistant at the MARTa Museum), and a conversation between Vito Acconci, Liam Gillick, Aaron Betsky, and Dennis Oppenheim.

Opening reception: Thursday, June 4, 2009, 6 – 9 PM

BRIGHT LIGHTS DARK SHADOWS - BERLIN

Chris von Steiner is a French visual artist creating digital fairytales out of the stories he grew up with. Combining the pop icons of his youth with bold colors, elements from movies, music, books, and television, Chris von Steiner’s digital paintings touching your heart and sticking in your mind like a pop song. He has exhibited all over Europe and the USA; this is his second exhibition at Strychnin Gallery Berlin.
Along side Chris will be great French artist MKAN, and this will be his first show in Berlin! Through personal mythology and metaphoric language, MKan has created a family of strange allegorical characters in his own image. Aditionally Strychnin Gallery is proud to present Francois Escalmel in the vault.

We are very excited for the show and hope to see you there :)

SCORE - NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE

START DATE: 30/04/2009

END DATE: 09/05/2009

OPENING HOURS: Wednesday – Saturday 12-5pm

ADMISSION COST: free

‘Score’ consists of work by students, graduate fellows, Graduate Studio Northumbria artists and staff from the Fine Art department at Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Zoë Anderson documents the information overload we receive from the internet and how we process and absorb what we view.

Luke Dixon makes portraits that represent both the physical and the metaphorical, creating large-scale physiological depictions of people’s moods, imagined resemblances and idiosyncrasies.

Padraig Lynch provides a social commentary on the darker side of human activity, namely addiction and violence.

Scott Hall is interested in the relationship between the production and deletion of information over time.

Adam Hogarth deals with the notions of family and autobiography using photographs – be they either collected, taken as a child or stolen by the artist.

Irena Krizman builds multi-layered images that represent space as a series of fragile and fragmented tracings.

Becky Rhodes seeks to locate an authentic female being: self-defined, pre-verbal and unapologetic, a re-imagining of woman in her primitive state.

Sebastian Trend is interested in the concept of change, permanence and impermanence, questioning how one holds on to the transitory.

Daniel Wilde playfully combines contrasting architectural periods and styles – ancient and modern, domestic and retail – to interrogate concepts of functionality, and our relationship with public and private space.
