JOURNEY HOME - GRAND RAPIDS

A large group gathered outside the Rapid Transit system's Central Station in Grand Rapids, Michigan last Friday July 17th for the public dedication of Dennis Oppenheim's recently installed sculpture Journey Home. The artist spoke to the group briefly describing the work.

He said, Journey Home is a spiraling 24-foot high circular form of rolled steel tubing clad with perforated metal, colored acrylic and slotted sandblasted Lexan. The form originates as a point in space, which journeys in a spiral configuration to the shape of a house.

The work was commissioned by the Interurban Transit Partnership and constructed by La Paloma Fine Art, an art fabrication company based in Sun Valley, California.

Dennis Oppenheim is one of the leading artists in the field of sculpture with a career spanning over forty years. He has concentrated on public art since the 1980s. Other public projects to be completed in 2009 are Garden of Evidence for Scottsdale, Arizona; Arriving Home for Chicago; Still Dancing for Toronto; Pathways to Everywhere for Calgary; Radiant Fountain for Houston; and Paintbrush Gateway for Las Vegas.

A book on Oppenheim's recent projects titled: Public Projects was just published by Charta, Milan. Included are essays by artists Vito Acconci and Liam Gillick and scholars, Aaron Betsky and Aaron Levy. It is available from Distributed Art Publishers.

DENNIS OPPENHEIM - NEW YORK

Dennis Oppenheim

Burning Contract, Splash Building
Swarm, Spiral Metamorphosis

June 4 – June 27, 2009

at the Janos Gat Gallery

195 Bowery (at Spring Street)

An exhibition of proposals for large-scale public projects by Dennis Oppenheim, the pioneering Land and Body artist. In addition to recently secured commissions in the U.S., Canada, China, and Europe, the exhibition will include Burning Contract, a large model depicting a sixty story building the idea of which is based on a rolled swirl of paperset on fire.

One featured work, titled Splash Building, depicts a giant water drop crashing into liquid, and bursting upward into a splayed cylinder, which forms the exterior structure of a forty-story building. Oppenheim refers to this piece as an “event sculpture,” having developed its form from the results of a dynamic action. The same applies to Swarm, a vortex caused by the flight path of hundreds of birds, resulting in the perfect lineal form of a six foot diameter cup and saucer, which will hang in the gallery. In another hanging work, the aptly named Spiral Metamorphosis, various imagesboats, cars and airplanes morph into their opposites sunglasses, hats, etc. over a progression of states within a spiral concourse.

Some of the projects represented in this exhibition come from a concurrent museum exhibition of Oppenheim’s work at MARTa Museum, Hereford, Germany, mounted by Jan Hoet, Director of Documenta, 1992. The exhibition at the Janos Gat Gallery will present, for the first time in the United States, the new monograph on Oppenheim’s public art projects. The 300 page book, published by Charta, Milan, includes text by Friederike Fast (Jan Hoet's Assistant at the MARTa Museum), and a conversation between Vito Acconci, Liam Gillick, Aaron Betsky, and Dennis Oppenheim.

Opening reception: Thursday, June 4, 2009, 6 – 9 PM
