FOR THE BLIND MAN IN THE DARK ROOM LOOKING FOR THE BLACK CAT THAT ISN'T THERE - ST. LOUIS

CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM ST. LOUIS PRESENTS
For the blind man in the dark room looking for the black cat that isn’t there

In September, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis presents its most ambitious group show since its grand opening six years ago. For the blind man in the dark room looking for the black cat that isn’t there starts with the premise that art is not a code that needs cracking. Celebrating the experience of not-knowing and unlearning, the artists in this exhibition understand the world in speculative terms, eager to keep art separate from explanation. Embracing a spirit of curiosity, this show is dedicated to the playfulness of being in the dark.

Artists: Anonymous, Dave Hullfish Bailey, Marcel Broodthaers, Sarah Crowner, Mariana Castillo Deball, Eric Duyckaerts, Ayse Erkmen, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Peter Fischli & David Weiss, Rachel Harrison, Giorgio Morandi, Matt Mullican, Bruno Munari, Nashashibi/Skaer, Falke Pisano, Jimmy Raskin, Frances Stark, Rosemarie Trockel, Patrick van Caeckenbergh, David William. Catalog designed by Will Holder.

For the blind man in the dark room looking for the black cat that isn’t there is curated by Anthony Huberman, chief curator of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis.

For the blind man in the dark room looking for the black cat that isn’t there will travel to an additional American venue, and a slightly modified version of the exhibition will simultaneously travel to three European venues:

Spiral Festival 09: Art/Festival/Activities

This year’s Spiral is inspired by the work of Camden Arts Centre’s current exhibiting artists, Johanna Billing and Alexandre da Cunha. It takes as its starting point the strange codes of conduct and rituals that we often take for granted in everyday life. During the weekend, visitors of all ages will be invited to take part in specially commissioned projects by artists Fay Nicolson, Annie Davey and collective They Are Here, designed to unmask the habits and behaviour we see around us each day.

Contribute to the visitor experience of Spiral by taking part in a guide making production line with artist Fay Nicolson, incorporating both temporary and permanent features present during the weekend.

With Annie Davey, use your mobile phone to capture discrete visual observations, which will in turn inform a performative public announcement service made at regular intervals.

Take part in the production of a series of collaborative short films with artist collective They Are Here. Sign up to become a member of the crew, and enjoy the process of live filming and instant editing.

Sign up to try your hand on the ceramics wheel with Kate Tilley in our unique ceramics studio.

Visitors are invited to come and create their own art works, enjoy the Café and garden and sample all the gallery has to offer during this annual summer festival.

Admission is free, and all events are drop-in.

KRIS LEWIS - DENVER

Kris Lewis, "New Works"
August 22nd - September 12th, 2009
Opening Reception on Saturday, August 22nd from 7 - 10 PM.

David B. Smith Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition of figurative paintings by artist Kris Lewis. This collection of new works, surrealist portraits inspired by Lewis’ rich family history, will be on display from August 22 through September 13, 2009. A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009 from 7 PM to 10 PM.

Born and raised in suburban New Jersey, Kris Lewis draws upon his own familial relationships as source material. Growing up in a family that included seven brothers and one sister, Lewis finds limitless inspiration from his mother. An immigrant who was forced to flee from communist forces in her home country of Latvia, Kris’ mother raised their entire family on her own after separating from his father. She instilled in him a love of Latvian heritage and its traditions, which shine through as a major influence in his work today. Lewis’ family history not only manifests as characters and their relationship to the particular background of the pieces, but also in the emotions and expressions of the figures presented.

Lewis utilizes this influence to portray characters that masterfully display juxtaposition between strength and fragility. Often creating photorealistic depictions of slight yet dignified subjects, the artist draws loosely upon his references to inspire completely imagined scenes and a unique emotionality. His subjects act as vessels for hidden stories, delicate emotion and universal truth. In addition to incorporating symbols of the Bible and the Renaissance, Lewis’ affinity for the masters of old is apparent in his depiction of the human figure. Subtly weaving contemporary imagery such as tattoos and modern clothing into classical settings, Lewis’ work conveys a timeless quality in which subject’s expression takes center stage.

Kris Lewis studied at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, before relocating to Los Angeles where he lives and works today. His work has been exhibited in galleries throughout world, including exhibitions in L.A., San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Miami, London, and Hong Kong. Lewis’ works have also been featured publications such as Modern Painters, Juxtapoz and American Art Collector. He has also collaborated on a number of projects with musician will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas.
