SHANA LUTKER - STOCKHOLM

Shana Lutker - "Forever Will a Blockhead Be"
Wednesday, May 27, 6-8pm

Inspired by dream analysis, psychoanalytic practice, actual objects, and historical documents, Shana Lutker’s conceptual works explore the boundaries between the subjective and objective nature of reality. Working with a variety of media, including drawing, sculpture, performance and installation, Lutker reframes familiar objects and clichés, and addresses archetypical anxieties such as desperation, guilt, shame and loneliness. Disabling the frameworks and assumptions we rely on between reality, time and history, Lutker exposes the instability of knowledge, and resultant anxieties between the individual and civilization.

Shana Lutker was born in Northport, 1978, New York, and received her MFA from UCLA in 2005. She has exhibited widely throughout the U.S., and had exhibitions in Europe as well. Her work has been written about in the New York Times, Art Review, and Time Out New York. Lutker lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

*The artist will be present at the opening.
*The exhibition runs until July 3, 2009.

CHAPTER 8 - BRUXELLES

Chapter 8 - If you don't buy it from us... it's not our problem!

“If You Don’t Buy It from Us It’s Not Our Problem”, is an exhibition inspired by the bottomless hunger of the consumer machine. In his first solo exhibition at think.21, American artist Michael Salter will take over the gallery space with an installation combining a large scale robot, a singing banana, and a 23 m. fluorescent yellow wall covered with poignant, absurd and baffling drawings.

Michael Salter considers himself an obsessive observer of contemporary visual culture, where graphics and corporate identities, signage and symbols are used to communicate the culture of commerce. These images wield tremendous power in the visual landscape we occupy. Salter is fascinated, disgusted and hypnotised by this influx of images. As media seeks to deliver its consumer message in an infinite number of exposure points, Salter questions this motivation and stands critical of a visual culture driven primarily by commerce.

Through observation, cataloguing, reinterpretation and re-contextualisation, Salter processes his response to the visual landscape of corporate branding, logos, and taglines. His work is realised in series of digitally drawn icons, slogans and 3 dimensional signage filled with illogic, cynicism, absurdity and humor. His icons capture the authoritative nature of visual branding and subvert its power. Far from being a simple parody, his work intends to incite investigation and nurture responses of new narratives.

Salter’s explores issues of consumerism in various ways. He creates robots of various shapes and sizes, called Styrobots, which are made of polystyrene packing pieces puzzled together. His Styrobots are informed by Minimalism, Sci-Fi, Duchamp, toys and character design. Salter uses the polystyrene found in computer, toys or electrical appliances boxes. The combination of the various pieces results in huge installations or miniature sculptures thus creating a playful and unsettling experience while commenting on waste, the re-use of discarded material, and our uneasy relationship technology. The object itself can appear intriguing and beautiful.
At first it appears to be a friendly machine, yet after close inspection it nevertheless reveals a much alarming reality. The polystyrene robot becomes a fearsome symbol of human consuming folly that is set to destroy mankind.

MORALE HAZARD TALK -

This Saturday, May 23 at 11:00 am

Exhibiting artist Mark Wentzel discusses his installation Morale Hazard, and the range of aesthetic, social, and conceptual concerns that influence his practice. Personal history (Wentzel was raised in Detroit), economic realities (the current auto industry crisis), and site specificity (the Contemporary’s building which was a former truck repair facility), all played a part in his thinking about this exhibition.

ART OF IMAGINATION: Works of imagination originate when artists express their awareness of some significant relationship with larger forces in an effort to reveal their secrets. This genre is called by many names - fantastic realism, surrealism and visionary art.

Though all artists have a creative vision, the fantastic and highly imaginative artists of this group are of another realm. They have each created astounding works that reflect the theme of this exhibition in their own unique way. The society has chosen the title 'Art of Imagination' because it is the least restrictive, yet most unifying. BRIGID MARLIN, founder of this prestigious international organization and ERNST FUCHS, its honorary president, host exhibitions in London, Japan, Denmark and New York.

SEED: A center for the culmination of visionary exploration.
A gallery devoted to unveiling the beauty of our existence. The in-house visionary arts collective, a collaborative team of established and up-and-coming artists, will assist Seed Gallery in promoting and pursuing artistic inspiration.

I NEED SPACE - PARIS

I NEED SPACE

WELCOME IN MY MIND - PARIS

Bothsides Creative Agency présente:

"Welcome in my Mind" - Exposition du 11 juin au 12 juillet 2009

ARTISTS' BOOKS by JOAN LYONS

Artists' Books: Visual Studies Workshop Press 1971–2008
Edited and with a Preface by Joan Lyons
Introduction by Johanna Drucker, Afterword by Tate Shaw
176 pages, 7 x 10 inches, 226 color reproductions, section-sewn with paper covers, 2009

The beginnings of Visual Studies Workshop Press were based on equal parts of enthusiasm, synchronicity, happenstance, and a bit of conjuring. Thirty-seven years and over four hundred and fifty books later, this bibliography is an opportunity to review the accomplishments of a Press that was at once publisher, printer, access shop and teaching facility. Present when the emergent phenomenon of artists' books was taking shape, the Press became a site for collaboration. As Johanna Drucker notes in her introduction, "Learning what a book was and how it worked so that it was not just an inert vehicle for reproduction took a community of individuals groping towards innovation through experiment."

Central to this bibliography is an illustrated selection of one hundred and ten books with statements, in most cases, by their artist-authors. In addition to serving as the record of a prolific and long-lived artists' press, this book provides a representative sampling of bookworks produced by artists over the past three decades—as described in their own words. Also included is a complete bibliography and an illustrated timeline.
