PAS CE SOIR CHÉRI - OTTAWA

Not Tonight Honey/Pas ce Soir Chéri
Thomas Grondin, Hélène Lefebvre, Cara Tierney, Theo Pelmus

JULY 3 – AUGUST 2, 2009
HOUSE WARMING PARTY: Friday, July 3 at 7:00 pm
MOVING PARTY & SALE: Sunday, August 2 at 2 pm

For one month Gallery 101 will opens its doors to the performance art group Fait Maison! The group started in a private home as a means to explore performance art in an ‘open, yet private ideas laboratory’. The artists will generate performances throughout the month, with a special event every week. The exhibition will explore various notions of private/public, inside/outside, and the possibilities of transferring ephemeral and private works into the public sphere. The exhibition promises to be engaging and stimulating array of performance art events (exhibition).

Founded in 2005, Fait Maison is dedicated to the exploration and development of performance and performance related art. Involved in production as well as diffusion, Fait Maison provides a space for experimentation, support and exchange. Regular open labs held in private houses in front of a live audience are the source for its activities.

Thomas Grondin has received a Bachelor in Visual Arts from University of Quebec in Outaouais and finishing a Master of Art History from Carleton University. Since 1998 he has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions as well as video and performance programs, both as an artist and a curator. Grondin contributed to various cultural organizations and founded Fait Maison. He presently teaches art history at the CEGEP de l'Outaouais.

Hélène Lefebvre Since 2001, Helene Lefebvre has been exploring issues of identity and the relationship with the “other”. These questions manifest themselves in the form of a quest for meaning taken on by the individual within a social matrix: soft sculpture, printmaking, performance and video interplay in so many ways to permit her questioning, stimulate her reflection, renew the way she works and establish links between this material and the world of living beings.
-a grantee of the Ontario Arts Council in research and creation
-numerous exhibits and performances in Ontario, Québec and Nova Scotia
-participation in the management of art organizations in Ottawa and Gatineau since 2001

Cara Tierney is practicing performance artist based in the Ottawa. Her performance work began as a response to the construction and dissemination of femininity in today’s society. Using her own body as a point of departure she often foregrounds issues of sexuality in her work in an attempt to expose the hetero-centrist coding of our “comfortable” North American existence. As someone who came out very late in life she works with the notion of uncertainty and representation through definition. Using beauty rituals and bodily functions her work also questions how society structures our relationship with our own bodies and ultimately our identities, both private and public. While much of her work is audience based she has also started to create larger community based works, involving masses into participating in happenings.

In his performances Theo Pelmus creates shifting environments which speak about fluidity and circulation of liquids and the transformation of elements from a solid state into a liquid state. Driven by the idea of reinventing body anatomy he is interested in using elements that either come from the live spectre (such as butterflies) or elements that imitate life (such as red liquid circulating through tubes imitating blood flow, or a self-portrait bust made from chocolate, sugar or ice cream). Theo Pelmus is an artist with a BFA and MFA from the University of Fine Arts in Bucharest. With several awards, an emerging artist grant and representation by La Petite Mort Gallery here in Ottawa, he is an active performer both locally and internationally.

My favourite : The Godfather & Chaplin …par Kenza Cherkaoui ( Remp’Art Galerie)

ECCE HOMO TESCO - STOKE-ON-TRENT

Hello, here is some info about the next show at AirSpace...

In their latest work, 'Ecce Homo Tesco', Doyle and Mallinson present a range of horribly convincing and uncomfortably satirical dioramas, a conflation of contemporary concerns and debates. Dark yet humorous, modern props and scenarios are made to strange references loaded with pathos, mirroring society and our times: 'Behold the lazy, track-suited lager swilling man'.

Museum mounted skeletons and display cases of fake artifacts are installed in a celebration of regional museum displays and scientific hoaxes. Drawing on source material from bigfoot movie footage, fossil remains and commercial advertising, Doyle and Mallinson expand on ideas explored previously in 'Ecce Homo Erectus' recently shown at Venlo Stadhuis, NL.
