BETWEEN MAPPING AND MEMORY -

Between Mapping and Memory May 2 - 30, 2009
Opening Reception/ Gallery Hop: Saturday, May 2, 6-10pm

Mahan Gallery is pleased to present Between Mapping and Memory, an exhibition of collaborative paintings by Columbus based artists, Alana Odenweller and Scott Vogel.

Through use of figure and space, Odenweller and Vogel approach their collaborative paintings with blurred distinctions between abstract and representation. These combined methods are consciously interwoven within each painting to create illogical situations. It is the artists’ intention to hold the viewer longer by presenting complex narrative possibilities that offer contradictory, circular and disconnected content that suspends reason.

During their painting process, Odenweller and Vogel search through images from multiple sources and appropriate elements that appeal to the individual artist. As artists, they commence the pieces they are working on from different points of view. They make their own individual impressions with the images as they work separately on the same piece. When re-approaching the work after the other has painted, each is forced to re-evaluate their former impression as they begin to paint again. This process often goes through multiple cycles. Ironic visual alignment of images, often lead to unexpected connections and ideas for them. The curious viewer will be rewarded with subtle playful details the artists inherently embed in their works.

Although they paint together as collaborators, they keep their individuality within any given painting. Alana Odenweller renders images at a slow and deliberate pace, coaxing out details through a careful and thoughtful process. She builds images with several layers of faint line work and thin washes and brushstrokes. Scott Vogel is more efficient with his brushstrokes, attempting to infuse the forms with line work that pushes his threshold level of accuracy, all the while embracing his mistakes. Alana and Scott enrich and complicate the viewers experience with their individual styles of paint application, color and differing degrees of representation.

The Mahan Gallery presents the work of contemporary artists in a variety of media, including painting, photography, and sculpture. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 6pm and by appointment.

Aligned Through the Generations

***
Castillo art exhibit challenges viewer to regard the intensely personal “unfamiliarly”

Tarryn Teresa Gallery is pleased to present Strand, a solo exhibit by Los Angeles-based artist Castillo. Castillo’s work combines a celebration of ancestry and mixed cultural heritage. Castillo is exhibiting three installation pieces, which combine natural and commonplace materials such as hair and rope. Despite presenting these materials in ways new to the viewer, each installation preserves the integrity of the chosen material while cultivating a different recognition of the material in the viewer.

Ecliptic Eccentricity is comprised of five spheres made entirely of hair and suspended from the ceiling. Each sphere has an imposing physical presence- it hangs at eye level and is approximately three feet in diameter. The viewer confronts the installation and must rationally engage each sphere as both a member of a set and as an individual. In this way, it works as a metaphor for humanity-every human is a product of and thus inextricably linked to their parents, and ancestors, as well as a unique and entirely irreproducible being.

For many people, hair is an intensely personal part of their body- and for Castillo, hair embodies many aspects of personal identity. She writes: “Legends, rituals, folktales, identities, DNA sampling, stereotypes, value, sacredness, care and attachment are centered around our hair.” By presenting the viewer with a familiar part of themselves that is at once larger than life and incredibly simple, Castillo’s art challenges us to reflect on and adjust our personal perceptions that color our interpretation of reality.

For more information please contact the gallery.

RICHARD CARLYON - RICHMOND

Richard Carlyon: A Retrospective
Exhibition Opening: September 11, 2009, 6 - 8 pm

This exhibition and an accompanying catalogue will document the artistic career of Richard Carlyon (1930-2006), a pivotal figure in the Richmond arts community. While Carlyon's reputation as an influential and highly regarded teacher is legendary, he also maintained an active studio practice for over five decades, producing an extensive body of paintings, drawings, videos, collages, and constructions. Thematically grouped selections from these extensive holdings—most of which has never before been on public view—together with loans from private collections will give a comprehensive overview of his development and accomplishments. The artist's studio will be reassembled as another component of the show.

Coordinated by VCU's Anderson Gallery, with assistance from VCU professor emeritus of art history Howard Risatti, the project is a collaborative effort with 1708 Gallery, Visual Arts Center of Richmond, and Reynolds Gallery. The individual sections of this multi-site retrospective will open concurrently at all four venues with a progressive reception on September 11 and remain on view through October. A performance piece conceived by choreographer Chris Burnside as a tribute to Carlyon's intellect, innovation, and wide-ranging perspective will take place on Saturday evening, September 26, at the Grace Street Theater.

DIEGO HERNANDEZ - SANTIAGO

Design Head – Genève / Florent Agat, Mirjam Egger, Nathalie Fontana, Alba Rossier, Marie Vaillant

GALLERY ARTISTS
"The Colors of the Week"
Mixed Media Works - Gallery two

APRIL 21 - MAY 30, 2009
Reception: Friday, May 1, 6 - 8:30 PM.

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Pentimenti Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of works by Rebecca Rothfus "In the Open" and a group show "The Colors of the Week" by gallery artists, Kim Beck, Anthony DeMelas & Pete Checchia, Jacob Lunderby, Jackie Tileston, and more from April 21 - May 30, 2009. A reception with the artists will be held on Friday, May 1, from 6 - 8:30 pm.

Rebecca Rothfus continues to explore topics of landscape, architecture and evolvement of the early 21st century in this series of new paintings with a focus on our great state and recent travel. With her laser-like attention Rothfus concentrates on the man-made parts notable for their simple and elegant design, those architectural and mechanical pieces of our world that are not only functional and beautiful but also a little nostalgic. Be it a farmhouse, a water tower, or antennas, Rothfus introduces a spatial abstraction that tantalizes the viewer’s perception. She defines her shapes very clearly, with a cool sense of color harmony and a surreal starkness, enhancing the feeling of three-dimensional objects defying forces of gravity.
Rothfus features 16 paintings. The works range from 12 x 6 inches to 20 x 16 inches in the medium of pencil, gouache, paper mounted on panel.

Rebecca Rothfus was born in Pittsburgh, PA. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA) and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts / Tufts University (MAT). She exhibited at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, Chicago; ASAP Chicago, Chicago, IL; ArtHouse, Austin, TX; Riverwest Arts Center, Milwaukee; and more.
