DAVID HOCHBAUM - BERLIN

Also featuring Myths, Omens and Misunderstandings - Ver Mar in The Vault.

Reception for the artists October 9th at 7 p.m.
After his last solo show at Strychnin Gallery Berlin in November 2008, American artist David Hochbaum is now back with new works – this time going back to his roots in the darkroom. Presenting mostly black and white works based on photographs, Hochbaum’s preoccupation with houses, labyrinthine streets and cityscapes is brought to a new level in these carefully layered works. Ver Mar, whose sculptures of oceanic mythological creatures have already been seen in a few group shows at Strychnin Gallery, is showing a full-blown installation in Europe for the first time in The Vault, Strychnin’s exhibition room reserved for special occasions.

JASON SHAWN ALEXANDER - BERLIN

A SPACE IN ALL THE NOISE

Never having attended formal art school, art language and "isms" mean nothing to American painter Jason Shawn Alexander. The things that matter in his work are honesty and emotion, and while it is his aim to make people think, it is first and foremost to make them feel. Recently also exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, his works bring to mind painters such as Lucian Freud, sometimes revealing uncomfortably physical embodiments of his subjects’ emotions. Gene Guynn, also a painter, defines his women portraits through a symbolic scar that stands for each person's past experiences, memories and emotions.

IN OUR OWN IMAGE - BERLIN

Belgian artists Veulemans and Janssens have one thing in common: they share a passion for the eternal conflict between good and evil, life and death. In their works, this conflict is played out very differently though - while Veulemans stresses the beauty of decay and fragility of life in his taxidermist sculptures and installations featuring the bodies of real animals, Janssens’ sculptures are completely man-made and focus on the struggle of overcoming a mere physical existence. Often, his figures appear to wish they could escape from the sufferings their bodies are exposed to by battered machines and strange apparatuses holding them captive, and to release their battered spirits. American artist Christina Graf’s delicate paper installation titled “Merry-Go-Sorrow” will be presented in The Vault, Strychnin’s back room that is reserved for individual artists on special occasions.

We are very excited for the show and hope to see you there :)

ANNIE BERTRAM - BERLIN

In the last few years, photographer Annie Bertram has made a name for herself with her unique style, and the Gothic art scene can hardly do without her: among others, she did artwork for albums by such popular bands as Blutengel, Scream Silence or Terminal Choice, and her work appears regularly in large magazines as exclusive photo spreads and on covers. Her first photography book titled "Die Farben der Träume" (“The Color of Dreams”) was published very successfully in 2004 and received international recognition. Her second book titled "Wahre Märchen" (“True Fairy Tales”) was published in August 2008 by UBooks, and it is the works from this book that can now be seen at Strychnin Gallery.

Annie will take your breath away when you step into the Gallery as she will transform it into her own Mystical world……..Be prepared for a very special show!!!
