LIVING ROOM - BRISTOL

You and your guest are invited to attend a private view.

On Friday 4th September 7.00 PM - 9.00 PM at Knifesmith Gallery,11 Christmas steps Bristol BS1 5BS.

Khanage

Khanage now lives in her own fantasy world full of creatures, dreams and romance which she expresses through her work. There are no limits with her ideas or her medium and she is constantly searching for the next story within her life to connect to her art.

Rose Sanderson

Roses work is inspired by the world around her, especially that which is generally un-noticed or disregarded by others, seeing beauty in the seemingly ugly. Influences include insects and strange creatures, natural history, anatomy and sea life. She works mainly with mixed media, acrylics, ink, graphite and coloured pencil and aims to produce pieces that are intriguing, fresh and provocative.

Connie Reeves

Connie has a particular interest in traditional and dying crafts and methods, which she inherited from childhood and continued to build upon this craftsmanship within her art practice. She says of her work “When I work with taxidermy I am reminded of natures order, preservation, respect and the spectacle of natural beauty and its death. I am constantly amazed by anatomy and the process of bringing the dead back to life.” She has studied for the last 4 years alongside renowned Master taxidermist Mark Winston-Smith, is now a member of the National Guild of Taxidermists and has worked with Exeter and Tenby Museum on a number of projects.

Hope you can make it.

TIM LANE & JOSHUA BARBER

"The Innocents?" by Tim Lane

Tim Lane graduated from Falmouth College of Arts in 2004 with a first class (BA Hons) degree in Illustration. Since then he finds himself naturally gravitating toward the fine art market; preferring the greater creative freedom enjoyed in terms of style and subject matter. The degree- in which Tim concentrated primarily on book illustration- did however help give structure to his love for working directly from his imagination and gives his art its narrative quality. It also encouraged a passion for drawing, which is at the core of all his work.

Tim grew up in Cheltenham but is now based in Bristol where he has exhibited work extensively.

He won ‘The People’s Prize’ and ‘The Bristol Arts Consortium Prize’ for the painting ‘The Death Of Childhood’ in Bristol Art Show 07 at Centrespace Gallery.

"A good old-fashioned fight between me and the law" by Joshua Barber

Barber’s latest collection is vibrant and darkly humorous. The titles of his works are as memorable as the images themselves: “You are so doomed and don't even know it” and “Hook , line and naughty sinker.”

Episodic memories are the stories that define our lives. These memories are unpredictable; the big days fade into haze, while the smallest, most insignificant moments loom large and clear. We are left with a personal, scattered playlist of seconds.

I paint these moments, these microcosms of memory, and turn them into modern icons. Some are dark, some are whimsical. Basically, I’m interested in the good bits.

Joshua is a native of Richmond, Virginia. His work has been exhibited inLos Angeles, New York and at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts' "Art After Hours".

UPDATE!!!

As American artist Joshua Barber wasn't in the country for our private view last Friday, we decided to hold a another one. If you missed the last one, here's your second chance. If you came and liked Joshua's paintings this is a unique opportunity to meet him and discuss the work over a glass of wine or a beer. August 15th, 19:00 - 21:00 @ the gallery!

KNIFESMITH GALLERY - BRISTOL

July sees KNIFESMITH GALLERY open a second room. We will therefor be holding two simultaneous exhibitions:‘Save Yourself by Fran’ and ‘Everafters by Louise Phillips.’ You and your guest are invited to attend a private view.

FRAN
Fran is a mixed media artist who's work looks at the ever changing and challenging experience of being human. Our constant battle to connect with our mind, body and one another in order to try and find some kind of understanding of ourselves and this life we find ourselves in. Her paintings are a glimpse behind the scenes of our surface existence,as we continually seek change and mould new paths for ourselves using what we have learnt and experienced along the way. Text forms an integral part of many of Fran’s paintings. It represents the continual narrative of our lives, both internally and externally as we reflect, explore, question and communicate.

LOUISE PHILLIPS
Bristol based artist Louise Phillips is a constant sketcher, drawing on any materials found to hand and a vast imagination. From marks and lines emerge mysterious and strange figures.

NEW BROW UNDERGROUND CONTEMPORARY ART

A feature film presented by Humble Pictures in association with the Shooting Gallery.

First hand accounts from the artists, galleries and collectors who started and continue the new american art movement.

Pop Surrealism or Outsider Art is a wide spread populist art movement with origins in Low Brow art, underground comix, punk music, hotrod street culture, Kustum culture, Street Art, Graffiti, Graphic Design, Tattoo, Surf Culture, Tiki Culture and other California sub-cultures.

This is not a current version of Modern Pop Art. This a new movement, a new thinking in the art world. These are the artists that will inspire a new generation.

Just as artists from the expressionist, Ab-Ex and Pop Art periods their importance was unrealised until many years after they were "discovered". Most of the public has already seen these artists through their other work, ad campaigns, tshirts, album covers and graphic design.

Watch as this new movement rises from the streets and into the galleries.
