I AM BY BIRTH A GEVENESE - LONDON

PRIVATE VIEW: THURSDAY 18 JUNE 18:30 - 21:00

Vegas Gallery is pleased to present ‘I am by birth a Genevese’ , an installation project imagined by Swiss artist Alexandre Bianchini and French/Swiss artist Pascal Rousson to re-enact the strange atmosphere of Doctor Frankenstein’s laboratory and generate a new art work, a new creature. Made of several and diverse works, purposely clashing with each other, their creation will only been revealed on the evening of the preview.

More than 160 artists have accepted their invitation, and if the majority of the works are not particularly shocking, most of them thrive on the idea of weirdness, or possess an inner weirdness (either by the medium, process, or subject used within the work), and their relation to the theme will make sense when displayed altogether. Following Frankenstein’s experience, each work being a metaphor of the scavenged body parts used to conceive the Creature, they were interested to produce an installation, a creature, made out of very eclectic works, in order to create a visual surprise, looking to see if coherence will appear within the accident and the apparent disaster. It also allows them to play with the popular conception of the artist who depicts him as possessed, literally occupied by an inspired spirit that creates and self-destructs.

Both Alexandre Bianchini and Pascal Rousson practices thrive already on the understanding of the nature of art and artist: sourcing and then manipulating their material surroundings, they play with the idea of facades, stage or theatre, and present artists as self-mythologizing thieves of ideas and images. Their practices highlight the social framework conditions within which the artists’ personal relationships are developed, and the inevitability of citations in a post-modernist world who questions the model of artistic imagination and the loss of meaning of images. In this instance, the parallel with the theme of Frankenstein came to them naturally, through the notions of creation, invention and imagination, present within any artistic practice.

This project questions also the different way of exhibiting artworks, through the tradition of Salons and Cabinets of Curiosities, who used to be the only places where art works where exhibited and without curatorial approach. In this instance, the installation can be seen as a critic and metaphor for the role of museum curator, seen as a fake god who tries, through new arrangement and themes, to create a new meaning for works which are fading away trapped in those graves for contemporary art. By opposition, Alexandre Bianchini and Pascal Rousson wish to conduct experimentation, stressing on the visual result rather than a theme: the theme is merely a pretext for the visual clash and experience.

By the juxtaposition of various works within the installation, and their status as parts of a larger whole rather than as self-contained pictorial objects, the installation challenges the concept of art and artists as singular entities, as well as the art’s dissident vision of itself.

HAVARD PEDERSEN - VANCOUVER

New Works is a solo exhibition by the Norwegian-Vancouver based artist Havard Pedersen. The exhibition consists of three separate projects that deal with different considerations of narrative structures. Through a formal investigation into the formats of video, music, and text Pedersen attempts to negate the implied linear programming of these mediums in favor of alternative modes of representation.

For the work Drums Pedersen samples Justin Timberlake’s track Like I Love You utilizing an iconic break in the middle of the pop song’s climax. Like I Love You follows the usual two-part construction of —melody and lyrics—however Pederson’s interest is not their harmonious relationship but Timberlake’s gesture of speaking to the melody and thus recognizing the songs internal structure. In only sampling a vacant space embedded between the parts of the song, then looping the selected section, Pederson provides an infinite break that relieves the musical component from the song; allowing the viewer to consider the integral modes of presentation rather than the music.

The video Flashmaster is a looped rendering of a bodybuilder bench-pressing his maximum weight. The action is never completed as Pedersen edits out the extension leaving the man in a state of unsettled equilibrium. The artist’s interest in bodybuilding stems from the sports relationship to forms of abstract art. A critique of abstraction is that it is essentially about nothing as it speaks an insular language that’s self-perpetuated by its practitioners. Similarly this can be related to the formal consideration of a bodybuilder’s body as containing a type of beauty that is subjected to the knowledge and practice of a fellow bodybuilder.

Talk Show Excerpt takes form as a scripted re-presentation of a Norwegian talk show. Pedersen returns this popular television show to its preliminary scripted state whilst further exaggerating the innate “dry” tone of the dialogue by means of editing the selected section. This gesture of sampling, editing, and re-presenting is coherent between each of the works; provoking an unavoidable relationship between each of the pieces as well as an objective monotony within the gallery space. As Pedersen consistently reveals the inner-workings of his mediums he further puts into question the assumed narrative structures of his selected subjects.

BRIAN PAULSEN - GRAND FORKS

Elodie Haslé
Née en France (Grenoble) en 1971, E. Haslé est passionnée de dessin depuis l’enfance, et attirée par les peintres surréalistes tels que Magritte et Dali. Elle concrétise son projet d’artiste-peintre depuis 2006, exposant dans divers lieux publics et Galeries à Lyon (où elle a vécu pendant quatorze ans), et dans plusieurs Galeries à Bruxelles, où elle s’est installée l’année dernière. Dans le cadre de son exposition à l’Espace Art Gallery, Elodie Haslé présente des poèmes et calligrammes encadrés. Des textes chantants, des sentiments, de la tendresse et de la liesse. Les liens du couple et les liens enfants-parents sont célébrés avec justesse et délicatesse. A côté de cela, Elodie Haslé travaille à l’édition d’un recueil de poèmes, qu’elle écrit et illustre.

«Nous sommes de bruit, d’informations, de vérités et de contre-vérités qui passent et s’échappent, se transforment et se contredisent aussi vite que la lumière... Retrouver le silence, le calme, la sérénité, un matin d’été dans une abbaye du sud de la France, moment de grâce, silence, lumière, équilibre parfait, entre ciel bleu et champs de lavande. Dire le silence en peinture : j’ai voulu relever ce défi et jour après jour des mois durant, j’ai creusé ce sillon, une vraie ascèse pour moi habituée à travailler le mouvement et la violence, et au final un vrai plaisir, revenue à toucher par une autre approche ce point d’équilibre, là où les forces opposées se rencontrent, et qui est finalement le fil rouge de ma peinture depuis toujours. Au fil du temps, ma pratique s’est enrichie de mes rencontres, je me suis formée auprès d’autres maîtres, en calligraphie arabe, en peinture chinoise et au cours des ateliers que j’anime maintenant depuis quelques années, j’essaie à mon tour de donner, comme j’ai reçu ».

Ignacio Guzman
Ignacio Guzmán artiste péruvien né en 1961 a suivi des cours aux Beaux Arts de Lima (Pérou) ainsi qu’au conservatoire de Lima et Madrid. Il a travaillé à plusieurs projets en ce qui concerne la céramique architecturale avec l’architecte José Cardenas et a participé aussi à un projet de formation dans un atelier de production céramique dans les Andes Péruviens à Cajamarca. Il a été professeur à l’Université Catholique de Lima pendant plusieurs années à la faculté des Beaux Arts. Ignacio Guzmán a exposé ses œuvres dans plusieurs pays, dont le Pérou le Portugal et l’Espagne. Il a également obtenu certains prix notamment celui de « Salon de Invierno » de Barcelone et il fut finaliste au concours de la Communauté de Madrid ainsi qu’au Concours « Biennale de Aveiro » (Portugal). Actuellement il habite en Espagne. Les sculptures d’Ignacio Guzmán transitent librement entre l’abstrait et la représentation, faisant subir au spectateur une certaine incommodité, celle qui est ressentie lorsque l’on se trouve face à un objet qu’on n’arrive pas à définir. L’utilisation de formes géométriques basiques nous renvoie au minimalisme, un courant qui nous a toujours plongés dans le naufrage interprétatif, sans plus d’adjectifs que ceux qui sont utiles à décrire l’existence formelle et nue. C’est dans ce sens que nous pouvons dire que les œuvres de Guzmán - dans le cas où elles voudraient nous dire quelque chose - parlent tout d’abord d’elles mêmes, comme l’énoncé qui se suffit à lui même, comme un cube ou une sphère qui ont renoncé au monde et déambulent librement. Puis, il y a aussi, celles, dont leur sens et valeur dépendent du monde. Guzmán fait référence à des maquettes quand il parle de son travail. Il y a, il est vrai, un parallélisme avec un bâtiment architectural dans la plupart de ses œuvres, comme si elles étaient un projet pour être reproduites à grand échelle. La ressemblance de certaines œuvres à des bâtiments anciens dans l’histoire donne au travail de l’auteur une certaine teinte qui serait apparemment hors du temps. Les œuvres de Guzmán parlent au spectateur avec leur propre langage, encadré par celui de la forme, de la lumière et de l’ombre.

HEIDI WULMS - TILBURG

Human beings are at issue in the exhibition 'SEE HERE, PEOPLE!' which is shown from June 4th until Juli 18th at gallery Kap Pur in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

The new works of Heidi Wulms (1968) are portraits of emotion. Emotions let characters go astray of what is normal and accepted. These atypical behaviors turn people into individuals, but at the same time they make people vulnerable.

Instead of working with one character, Heidi now works with multiple characters. This arises a broader colour pallet in the work of Heidi Wulms. Her work will move, intrigue and touch people.
