Tarryn Teresa Gallery is pleased to present Palimpsests, an exhibit from guest curator Elizabeth Williams featuring work by Cara Barer, Annie Vought and Christine Wong Yap. Whether done playfully or poignantly, the artists in Palimpsests pay tribute to the associations and meanings we bring to the written word. Collections of words can differ extraordinarily, as can the reader’s response to them. Letters, books, newspapers, magazines or small one-page notes all offer the ability to inspire feelings of attachment or even aversion. An audience’s perception is mainly influenced by the meaning of the words themselves, but the manner of delivery can create an air of legitimacy, sentimentality or stronger emotions. With these visual works, the artists address the continuum of the written word.
For Cara Barer, old volumes of books serve as inspiration. Wetting them and twisting and turning them into odd shapes, the volumes take on a new life. Sometimes made to resemble living beings and sometimes allowed to remain as abstract geometric shapes, these old volumes impress the viewer anew with their tangibility and physical presence. By retracing and cutting out the letters in private correspondence, Annie Vought interpolates herself into the original document with amusing and poignant results. Installation artist Christine Wong Yap creates text installations which address language’s inability to convey fully our meanings. In this exhibit, her installations and wall pieces feature text construed or arranged so as to be indecipherable.
In Palimpsests, the artists address the concept of re-purposement of words for artistic ends. Like the original meaning of a palimpsest, these words used in these pieces are encapsulated in their medium and transformed by it.

Some Room Alexandre David September 10 – October 10, 2009 Opening Thursday September 10 @ 8pm
Some Room, by Alexandre David is an exhibition consisting of an architectural space split in two. It is based on a simple differentiation between a space one can only look at and a space one can move around in. In a way, this is similar to what we experience every time we walk on the street and look through a window, or walk into a building and look at the ceiling. Our everyday architectural sensations are a necessary background for his work in sculpture. David does not reference architecture as a subject but makes work that relies on the way we walk through doorways with ease, walk alongside walls, turn corners and sit on benches for example. He works with standard heights of ceilings, tables, benches and steps. For this project, the grunt gallery space will be reorganized for the duration of the exhibition in a way that combines a very clear architectural experience with the sensibility that this is just one possible architectural intervention, or thought, among many.
Alexandre David lives and works in Montreal. He mainly works in the field of sculpture, and his projects often relate to architecture. His work has been shown in various museums and galleries in Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and France. In 2006 he was awarded the Louis-Comtois Prize, given to a mid-career artist by the city of Montreal. He has recently exhibited his work in solo exhibitions at Optica and Dare-Dare in Montreal and La Chambre Blanche in Quebec City. In 2009 he exhibited his work at Aceartinc in Winnipeg and took part in the show Base Camp at Truck in Calgary. He will also be taking part in the upcoming show Off the Wall at Concordia University’s Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery in Montreal.
Saturday August 29th from 2-6pm we will be hosting a book signing for Joshua Liner Gallery artist Travis Louie.
Travis will be on hand to personally sign copies of his new book 'Curiosities' and meet his fans. There will also be several small original works available to those who attend.
“HUMAN RIGHTS?” Complesso Monumentale Belvedere di San Leucio Caserta Da venerdì 11 settembre a domenica 11 ottobre 3 ottobre 2009 – giornata nazionale del contemporaneo AMACI – con visite guidate gratuite www.spaziotempoarte.com
A cura di Roberto Ronca
“HUMAN RIGHTS?”

***ENG*** On 10th December 1948 , the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed: for the first time in the history of humanity, a document concerning all the people of the world was drawn up. Everyone of us, only due to the fact that he was born, enjoys the rights endorsed by the Declaration. Everyone of us, regardless of the place where he was born and where he lives, enjoys these rights. Everyone of us has civil, political, social, economical and cultural rights. Everyone of us is equal to the others. Is it always so? In “HUMAN RIGHTS?” artists speak about human rights. The title, simple and direct, without roundabout expressions, expresses the main idea which must go with everybody’s life. In this event, uncomfortable, complex and denunciation subjects are dealt with, in order to sting the conscience of all those who, enjoying their own rights, don’t think about all people whose rights are violated every day.
The logic of “HUMAN RIGHTS?” is based on the fundamental concept of art as a universal expressive form, understandable by everybody regardless of his language and culture, regardless of his gender, of the subject and of the languages used. Languages vary depending on the artists’ experience and mastery, and they create new relationships with the audience, who approaches art feeling immediately involved and directly concerned. Discomfort images, violated rights images, images about everyday stories which should not exist, but even images which are able to deal with a delicate and difficult subject with wisdom and, why not, irony.
The exhibition will highlight different ways to see the matter, since the event is open to artists from all over the world. It becomes so particularly interesting to discover in which way the perception of the concept of “respect of the rights” is experienced and expressed.
The event aims to shake consciences: it deeply wants to avoid common places brought by word abuse: to speak about human rights has become so common that the words “human rights violation” are deprived of all meaning and by now they touch us only at a distance when we hear them, without getting them into our heads.
The most immediate way to retrieve that conscience, essential to be really part of a system which respects everybody’s rights, is to see with one’s eyes all that artists have to say. Images insert themselves in one’s memory in such an immediate and strong way that all those who visit it will leave it more conscious and emotionally involved.
To speak about human rights, according to artists, means to “pull out” many ideas which can’t find the space fit for the purpose in other events.
