17 RUE DE LA SENNE - BRUXELLES

In May and October 2009, an old laboratory of the ministry of economic affairs in Zennestraat 17 Rue de la Senne -a unique location in the heart of Brussels- will be the location to discover a crossover of innovating and contemporary artistic work. Eight artistic organizations, both Flemish and French-speaking have been offered the chance for a temporary residency in this 2500m2 building from April to December 2009 and they organize two common large-scale exhibition-events. A unique chance to admire the large mixture of artistic humus present in Brussels. This hub of contemporary artistic activity in a neighborhood in full development will also be open to the city and its inhabitants with extra activities in the common space.

The participating organizations - mainly from Brussels and active in visual arts - are: Constant, Josworld, Croxhapox, Komplot, Bains Connective, Fortlaan 17, SECONDroom, Q-O2.

JIN SHAN - SHANGHAI

PEKING FINE ARTS and DDM Warehouse presents Jin Shan Solo Exhibition: Stephen the Speculator

APRIL 11th - MAY 17, 2009

In Jin Shan's Solo Exhibition, the artist fabricates his show around an abstract martyr - Stephen (the Protomartyr of Christianity).

In the show, the abstract martyr is materialized into a herd of persecuted sheep, the latter being imagined as Stephen, the martyr of reality.

The exhibition is divided into five individual parts telling one story: sheep persecuted, sheep educated, and sheep's fight-back integrating animation, performance and installation.

The visitors are guided by the artist's designed route into a testing field for the power of creating martyr which humorously discusses the topics of how the public obtains power and the destiny of a martyr.

One Night Stand
Judith Wambera / new photographs

Artist Statement:

I have never particularly liked dolls. They have these blank faces, wide staring eyes. At first, I felt they were not judgmental; they just took the world as they found it. Now clowns, though much like dolls, are deeply and terrifyingly judgmental. And when they prance around a circus tent, one realizes that one is in a kind of psychological inferno. I felt safer with dolls. They look at you from the top of a bureau, in the bottom of a trunk, left on the back porch in the rain. They all look pretty much alike. I started with dolls because unlike children they a. don’t talk back b. let their limbs be manipulated and c. let you do unsavory things like decapitate them, remove arms and legs. I am now feeling a difference. Maybe I have been around them too long. They are hugely judgmental, full of disappointment and panic. My next show is trying to show more respect for the doll and less for my power as a plastic god. Each one has a story to tell. I am calling it “The Things That I Have Seen.” What the doll has seen has a lot to do with the child involved, the child who cannot tell his or her own story. But if you, if you ask carefully, the witness, the doll, can tell a tale.

Thanks,

SYLVAIN POLONY - PARIS

Exposition Sylvain Polony- All over…. The wall !

SYNESTHESIA 2009 - GRANADA

THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON SYNESTHESIA, SCIENCE & ART
April 27th-29th, 2009
Parque de las Ciencias de Granada

DO YOU HEAR WHAT I SEE? SEE WORDS, LETTERS OR NUMBERS IN COLORS? DO THE NAMES OF FRIENDS HAVE FLAVORS OR TEXTURES? DOES PAIN HAVE COLOR? These types of relations are what we know as SYNESTHESIA.

SINESTESIA/SYNESTHESIA is the term used to describe a set of cognitive states related to the union of the senses. Etymologically speaking, ‘syn' = union, ‘estesia' = senses; thus ‘union of the senses'. Synesthesias are genuine perceptions, not memorized visual associations from childhood or metaphorical speech. They are produced by hyper-connectivity among the cerebral areas. Neurologically speaking, if the crossing is extensive, that is to say, if the interconnections are related to cerebral parts that process or represent summaries of concepts, this would explain links between creativity, metaphor and synesthesia, with the consequent greater incident among poets and artists. The latest investigations carried out in this field turn out to be extremely interesting for knowledge of the human mind. It is an open window to our brain which may allow us to resolve many cognitive relationships with perception and thought. For this reason, the University of Almería, the International Foundation Art Cittá, and City Hall of Caves of Almanzora have collaborated jointly in the organization of the 1st International Congress on Art and Synesthesia, for the purpose of showing and exploring the advancements made by European experts and American investigators of great prestige, in each of the numerous aspects of synesthesia. The interdisciplinary focus of the Congress that we present enables all those interested to approach a territory as exciting as the one that occupies us, being especially directed towards neurologists, psychologists, artists, linguists, art historians, musicians, educators and investigators of sensory disabilities, students and synesthetes of all categories...

Organized by artecitta, this congress explores different areas of scientific studies:

• Neurociencia y cognición / Neuroscience and cognition
• Neurológica y lingüística / Neurology and linguistic
• Psicológica y psiquiátrica / Psychological and psychiatric
• Lingüística y literaria / Linguistic and literary
• Percepción, creatividad y sinestesia/ Perception, creativity and siynethesia
• Didáctica y educación / Teaching and education
• Artística / Artistic
• Gráfica, diseño y sinestesia / Graphics, design and synesthesia
• Nuevas tecnologías y sinestesia / New Technologies and synesthesia
• Música y sinestesia / Music and synesthesia

TROISIEME CONGRES INTERNATIONAL SUR Synesthesia, SCIENCE & ART
27 avril-29, 2009

STAGE FRIGHT! - GLASGOW

CCA and Suspect Culture Present: Stage Fright!an exhibition exploring the relationship between the gallery and the stage

“Theatre, of course, is rubbish. It happens in the evenings, when there are more exciting things to do, and it does go on a bit. It typically involves people dressing up and pretending to be other people, putting on accents and shouting too much. Since visual art practice has so decisively repudiated, problematised, complicated the whole business of pretending, it’s hardly surprising that the theatre, still apparently a way of representing away in complete naïvety, should be given a wide berth, involving, not infrequently, disdainful glances.” Nicholas Ridout on Art & Theatre

“Art degenerates as it approaches the condition of theatre” Michael Fried – Art and Objecthood

This Spring, CCA and experimental theatre group Suspect Culture present new collaboration, Stage Fright, an exhibition exploring the nature of theatricality.

The artists in the show, from theatre and visual arts backgrounds, are Nick Powell and Jonny Dawe (working collaboratively as OSKAR), David Greig, Luke Collins, Dan Rebellato, Patrick Macklin, Graham Eatough, and Sharon Smith and Felicity Croydon (working collaboratively as Max Factory).

In the exhibition, the artists come together to explore the meaning of theatricality in their different fields. Within the visual arts the term ‘theatrical’ has often been used to denigrate an artwork – it somehow seems to lack ‘authenticity’. In the theatre world, ‘theatricality’ is viewed as a more positive agent – it creates a mental space where the imagination is freed and anything is possible. More recently there has been a noticeable trend to rethink the idea of the theatrical in the visual arts. Perhaps marking a shift away from the strict conceptualism of the past, many artists have embraced the potential of theatre, acting and set design.

In Stage Fright each artist has produced work that tests the idea of theatricality within the framework of a gallery, where emphasis is often placed as much on the power of the object as on the ideas at play in an exhibition. Among the many works, Nick Powell and Jonny Dawe test the perceptual shifts created by a mechanised series of stage backdrops. David Greig makes visible the slow tangential process of writing, drawing it out in real time with all its pauses, empty moments, erasures and final drafts. Luke Collins, meanwhile, records the rehearsal process for a work in the making.

A programme of events will accompany the exhibition, for details please check the CCA website www.cca-glasgow.com
