NO MAN'S LAND - LONDON

NO MAN’S LAND

PV 16th APRIL 2009, 6.30-10.00pm
Running 17 April – 03 MAY 2009
Thurs-Sun 12.00-17.00

Marcin Gajewski, Brendan Murphy, Vytis Puronas, Simon Read, Jeni Snell, Elaine Tribley, Simon Reuben White.

(Video, Painting, Sculpture, Installation, Photography and Sound).

Curated by Brendan Murphy, Cherie-Marie Veiderveld and Simon Reuben White

No Man’s Land is defined as an unoccupied area, land that is unowned and uninhabited (and possibly undesirable) and the ambiguous region between two categories or states or conditions (usually containing some features of both) where there is still a twilight zone, the tantalizing occurrences that are probably noise but might possibly be a signal.

Paul Virilio’s Dromology, whereby the increasing velocity of our global culture is driven by advances in technology and military innovation, suggests that reality is no longer defined by time and space. The high speed and seamless stream of culture that blurs experience allowing little or no opportunity to pause brings into existence the paradox of being everywhere at the same time and also being nowhere at all. A simple binary equation of reality and representation is no longer sufficient to decipher what we perceive.

In The Art of Travel, Alain de Botton echoes the correlation between what we experience and perceive and how this dominates our thought processes. He notes that journeys into expansive, alien or uninhabited spaces can bring about the opportunity for uninhibited reflection. “Large thoughts emerge from large views and new thoughts from new places”. All the works selected for this exhibition establish a littoral space, the region between high and low tide, or in-between space through contrast, defamiliarization or dislocation to slow things down and present possibilities for open thought and uninhibited contemplation.

INDIA ART SUMMIT 2009 - NEW DELHI

INDIA'S MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR

19TH - 22ND AUGUST 2009 Pragati Maidan (ITPO),
New Delhi - INDIA

Following the inaugural success of India’s first international art fair in 2008, the second edition is slated for the 19th – 22nd August 2009 in New Delhi, India.

In its very first year, India Art Summit™ attracted over 10,000 art enthusiasts over a span of three days which included art collectors, artists, critics, curators and students from across India and overseas. The 34 exhibiting galleries at the fair exhibited over 550 contemporary & modern artworks and sold over 50%, making India Art Summit™ one of the most successful first editions of an art fair across the world.

In 2009, the second edition of India’s international art fair promises to be much larger; showcasing the most diverse range of modern and contemporary paintings, sculpture, photography, mix media, prints, drawings and video art by established and upcoming artists. With over 50 top galleries from India and the Asian region, showcasing alongside western galleries to offer the world, a rich and fulfilling art experience in India.

From the 19th to the 22nd of August the Indian Art Summit, India's Modern and Contemporary Art Fair, will take place in New Delhi. The organisers have had a good response from galleries in the South Asian region, the Middle East, Europe and USA, however, the response from Australian galleries has not been as strong as they hoped it would be. Although applications to exhibit at the fair have officially closed, the fair managers have decided to extend the closing date for applications for any Australian gallery until the 10th of April.

MIKE PERRY - NEW YORK

Mike Perry Book Signing is on April 7, 2009 at Giant Robot New York. The signing will start at 6:00 pm and end at 8:30 pm (or later!). He will be signing copies of Hand Job: A Catalog of Type, Over and Over: A Catalog of Hand-Drawn Patterns and some of his other works, and all available at Giant Robot New York!

Hand Job: A Catalog of Type

In this digital age of computer-generated graphics and typography, it's refreshing to find typographers who still believe in working by hand. No longer relegated to designer's sketchbooks, hand-drawn type has emerged from the underground as a dynamic vehicle for visual communication-from magazine, book, and album covers to movie credits and football advertisements. As the practice and appreciation of hand-drawn type grows, it's time to celebrate the work of those typographers whose every letterform is a work of art.

Hand Job collects groundbreaking work from fifty an international array of today's most talented typographers who draw by hand. Graphic designer and hand typographer Michael Perry selects work representing the full spectrum of design methods and styles. Each hand-drawn work is entirely shaped by the artist's unique process-every one a carefully executed composition enhanced by unplanned "accidents" of line, color, and craft. Hand Job also includes photographs of found type, artist's studios, and the tools that help make typography come to life. Whether you are looking to invigorate your design work or are just in need of a little offbeat inspiration, Hand Job will have you reaching for your favorite pen.

Over and Over: A Catalog of Hand-Drawn Patterns

Pattern can be derived from many sources, if we remember to look closely. While patterns have been around forever, there's a recent movement, a tendency among designers, to allow patterns to animate their work with colorful and exuberant complexity. Over and Over: A Catalog of Hand-Drawn Patterns collects groundbreaking work from fifty of today's most talented designers who create patterns by hand and use them in their work in inventive and innovative ways. From Deanne Cheuk's patterns that adorn current fashion to those of Robin Cameron that explore her interest in art to Garrett Morin's patterns that arose from an exercise for a character called Eloie, the examples in this book push the boundaries of the traditional concept of what a pattern is. The selected works are often not an end result but the beginning of something else, of something bigger and broader. While the computer is sometimes involved in the production of patterns, the hand-drawn element is always evident in the uniqueness of these works. Featuring more than 250 vibrant and exciting patterns, Over and Over explores this magic on every single page and will inspire designers everywhere.

About Mike Perry

Michael Perry spends his days and nights in Brooklyn, New York, usually staring at his computer or sheets of paper. He uses patterns whenever possible, probably not as often as he should. He fell in love with patterns while digging through clip art books and has not looked back since. He has used patterns in his work for clients such as Zoo York, 2k, Zune, New York Times Magazine, and so on. Michael looks forward to a long life of making patterns.

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Devil's In The Details

Group Art Show Opening Devil's in the Details
April 11 – May 6, 2009
Reception: Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.
Giant Robot Gallery
437 East 9th Street
Between 1st Ave. & Ave. A, in the East Village
New York, New York 10009
(212) 674-GRNY (4769) | grny.net

Giant Robot is proud to present Devil's in the Details, a 10-person group art show.
Contributors range in artistic styles and backgrounds, from illustration and graphic design, to graffiti and fine art. Representing some of the most prolific and engaging voices in the art world today, each artist has created new original works for this show.

Participants include:

Sean Boyles - Applying his loose, yet honed style to drawings, paintings, printmaking, and even photos and videos, Boyles has the uncanny ability to make carefully composed depictions of the street appear effortless.

Ako Castuera - Castuera depicts a hyper-colored, gravity-defying world that is somewhat terrifying but also super fun. When she is not making her own art, she is a character artist for the Metacopalypse animated TV series.

French – Utilizing a distinct, finely detailed method to his drawings, French’s subjects include the morbid, the classic, the contemporary, and the strange, all executed with care and precision.

Maxwell Loren Holyoke-Hirsch – One of the hardest working artists in the art scene today, Holyoke-Hirsch has maintained his artistic vision and expanded on his style while showing in galleries around the world.

Andrew Holder – The patterns and shapes of Holder’s art are as distinct as the compositions he creates with both. Continually making work that exemplifies the direction of modern art, Holder most recently graced the cover of Arkitip.

Jordin Isip - Isip's mixed media work combines the look of raw sculpture with simple, modernist design, and graces book covers, album covers, and magazine articles.

Yellena James - In her artwork, James combines complex abstract forms to form larger images that take on lives of their own. Her colorful arrangements of organic shapes and tangled lines are at once floral and alien, organic and sci-fi, crafty and fantastic.

Jeremyville – Art, product design, animation--Jeremyville seems to do it all, and always with his trademark, innovative style and sophisticated presentation. His work has been shown around the world, and he continues to fill galleries with art that defies definition.

David Jien – Still developing as an art student, Jien’s pencil drawings incorporate a dream like world that embraces such elements as graffiti, aliens, and the people around him.

Matt Lock – At once, Lock's colorful, heavy metal-inspired paintings recall the crudest of notebook doodles with the most epic sci-fi landscapes. They are simple, stunning, and thought provoking.

The opening reception featuring many of the artists will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 11. For more information about the artists, GRNY, or Giant Robot magazine, please contact:
