THREE OPENINGS - CALGARY

Join The Art Gallery of Calgary on Friday, April 24, 2009 at 7pm for the launch of three three distinct and diverse exhibitions :

Intermediary - Michael Cameron’s paintings combine still motion and frenetic movement. Influenced by the local Alberta landscape and global social environment, Cameron’s process of applying multiple layers of paint creates subtle shifts in colour and depth constructing often tense atmospheres of everyday life.

Sospesi tra Cielo e Terra – Suspended Between Heaven and Earth - Italian artist Vincenzo Calli creates dream-like environments where languid figures of young men and women evoke a sensation of memory. Through the use of Classical Italian light and oblique perspective, Calli produces tension for his sensual figures and sanguine landscapes.

The Filthy Water Grotto is the first major collaborative exhibition by Calgary-based artists Justin Patterson and Stacey Watson. Their grotto of fabric, constructed like a child’s basement fort, acts like a membrane between the conscious an unconscious worlds of imaginative play and dreamlike environments.

Clearly these aren't just pictures, there is a whole story captured within. Sometimes a complex story and sometimes just a simple, funny story. "I am inspired by the conflicts within the human soul. I play with themes like innocence, freedom and virginity and their contradictions" says Pepeyn.

Rae Goodwin’s work in performance, photography, and sculpture examines aspects of family history as it influences the construction of her identity, as well as gender-based assumptions about freedom, the unknown, and nature.

Gallery Four: Tamy Ben-Tor: Videos
Using her expressive face, voice, and body, Ben-Tor writes and performs hilarious and unsettling monologues that examine personal and societal anxieties, contradictions, anger, and analysis.

Round Gallery: Nancy Popp: Untitled (Street Performances)
Untitled (Street Performances), (2005-2008), is a video and graphics installation that chronicles a series of actions which find artist Nancy Popp escaping the norms and boundaries of urban space.

TANGOS@TANGUERIA - MONTRÉAL

Mercredi 22 avril, la Tangueria recevra Tango Vivo, la soirée débute à 20 h 30. Le spectacle est à 21h. Dès sa création en 1998, Tango Vivo s'est imposé comme une force du renouveau dans l’univers du tango contemporain. L’ensemble montréalais Tango Vivo sera composé de Denis Plante au bandoneon, d'Anne-Marie Sylvestre au piano et de Francis Palma à la contrebasse. L'entrée est de 15$.

Mercredi 13 mai, la Tangueria recevra Carmen Piculeata et l'orchestre tzigane de Montréal, la soirée débute à 20 h 30. Le spectacle est à 21h. Violoniste virtuose, Carmen Piculeata est avant tout connu par le public pour son travail avec le Cirque du Soleil. Un spectacle de musique de l'Est et du tango. Carmen sera accompagné par 4 autres musiciens. L'entrée est de 15$.

CLEAN SKINS - LONDON

Vegas gallery is pleased to present new works by the British and French artist Greg Rook. The show is curated by Melanie Moreau. As a contemporary figurative painter, Rook enjoys playing with the relationship between form and function, popular culture and art history: he uses an allegorical iconography and a hyperrealist style, referencing directly to art history, while his subjects and sources are often from the cinema, mainly American and the Wild West fantasy. The cowboys become a metaphor for the painter, both as moral heroes and as idealised romantics.

In this instance, the setups often show an idyllic nature, where cowboys are busy killing or skinning animals, tinted by the beautiful and romantic colours of early Technicolor cinema, evoking old films such as The Wizard of Oz or Gone With The Wind. The mise-en-scene is also cinematographic, borrowing the close-up, man-camera or circumnavigation techniques; giving a rhythm to the narrative. Yet with Clean Skins, which refers both to the counter-terrorist vocabulary and the idea of bare canvas, the utopian vision and idealisation of the wilderness life, presented in his previous series, has morphed into a more dramatic post-apocalyptic vision; mirrored in his use of the canvas and the paint.

Most of the works presented here are an allegory of fatherhood and manhood, where our hero asks himself: as a man, would I be able to protect my family and provide them the essential basics needed to survive in the case of a catastrophic scenario? In fear of the future, and of our inadequacy, we tend to look back at the past in the search for answers or advice, as well as role models. In this instance, the American dream of the early settlers is seducing: discovering new territories, a wild nature, men executing precise tasks with essential meanings, based on a system of strong moral and religious beliefs…etc. Yet, the cynicism of a European, added to the real and scary fundamentalist character of the early settlers, seems to crack at the surface.

We are endlessly drawn into the paintings, or illusionistic spaces, before being thrust back onto the surface, through the addition of elements that suddenly reveal very clearly and honestly the nature of the constructed image: the use of different drawing techniques, the different glazes applied on the canvas, or the blank areas left purposely. As a result, the paintings have both fantastical and delusional qualities, so romantic and romanticised that they feel artificial, even kitsch. They are meant to be both window and shutter, a lie that dares to tell the truth. They involve an aesthetic of artifice rather than of nature, by “quoting” imagery to make conceptual points.

If cinema and hyperrealist painting have illusionistic and believable qualities, in order to mirror reality, they also have the intrinsic delusion of something magical. In the light of the real world, the cinematographic romance is slowly dying, like a Dead Sea Fruit: something that appears to be beautiful or full of promise but is in reality nothing but illusion and disappointment.

At the end, Rook merely wishes to construct a world in which he can paint; and maybe live.

Greg Rook graduated from Goldsmith College in 2002. Since then he has exhibited throughout Europe, America and Asia in both Solo and Group exhibitions. Recent exhibitions have included solo shows at Lounge Gallery-London and Gallery Min Min-Tokyo. In 2010 Greg Rook will be presenting a solo project with The David Roberts Art Foundation in Camden.

BLACK MARIA FILM FESTIVAL - JERSEY CITY

The Huntsville Museum of Art along with the Huntsville Film Co-op welcome the most diverse and expressive short film festival in the United States. The Black Maria Film Festival is an international juried competition of independent film makers which features a variety of bold contemporary works.
