He was a creative role model in numerous ways – contributing his generosity and passion by providing sound advice to colleagues and students, serving on boards, keeping his critical eye on local and international art developments, and conducting his professional and personal activities with dignity and grace.

MORALE HAZARD TALK -

Our Resource Room is being temporarily converted into a bank vault repository for the creation and display of FUNDRED dollar bills, the currency of artist Mel Chin's FUNDRED and OPERATION PAYDIRT project. This pro-active collaboration with teachers and three million students around the United States takes on the problem of lead pollution in New Orleans. Bring your family and friends and join us in drawing activities while learning more about this innovative and restorative work of art. Fundreds made on-site will be displayed in our Resource Room!

We hope you can join us for this kick off celebration,and to help us spread to word as we continue to work towards Mel's goal of creating Three Million Fundreds! All materials, juice, and cookies will be provided.

Main Gallery: Mark Wentzel: Morale Hazard
Mark Wentzel’s Morale Hazard is an installation that examines corporate power, masculinity, and money, each in a precarious state of transformation or decline.

Left Gallery: Rae Goodwin: Relativity
Rae Goodwin’s work in performance, photography, and sculpture examines aspects of family history as it influences the construction of her identity, as well as gender-based assumptions about freedom, the unknown, and nature.

Gallery Four: Tamy Ben-Tor: Videos
Using her expressive face, voice, and body, Ben-Tor writes and performs hilarious and unsettling monologues that examine personal and societal anxieties, contradictions, anger, and analysis.

Round Gallery: Nancy Popp: Untitled (Street Performances)
Untitled (Street Performances), (2005-2008), is a video and graphics installation that chronicles a series of actions which find artist Nancy Popp escaping the norms and boundaries of urban space.

Theatre As Metaphor: Setting the Scene

This issue of Art Lies is situated between theatre and theatricality or, in more direct terms, between the theatre and its metaphors. The trigger for this inquiry was the result of the continued disdain for—and obsession with—theatrical tropes that preoccupy certain strains of contemporary artistic practice, as traced by a series of exhibitions over the past year. Out of these exhibitions, and the notions of theatre they brought to bear, grew the pressing need to readdress the legacies and the pervasiveness of metaphors related to the stage that continue to permeate the discourses of painting, sculpture, performance, installation, photography and film and video. What this issue is not is an inquiry into a specific form or tradition. Nor is it a guidebook to all of the likely—and unlikely—places from which theatre, theatricality and its antecedents might be thought to emerge. Instead, it is meant to function as a collection of statements that interrogate the primacy of theatre as metaphor in not only contemporary visual and literary contexts but beyond. And, much like W. J. T. Mitchell, who identified the vital signs of a “pictorial turn” in contemporary culture in the mid 1990s, one might ask what the characteristics of a “theatrical turn” would be, if there were ever such a turn. Rather than accept the image that the theatre offers of itself—both in vision and language—a theory of a theatrical turn would surely have to contend with the possibility that it is through this very mode that all cultural and social exchanges are mediated.
