LOVESEATS FOR COMPLICATED RELATIONSHIPS - CALGARY

Loveseats for Complicated Relationships

SHOWCASING WORK BY

Sylvia Power

Sylvia Power’s Loveseats for Complicated Relationships dissects the ever-present negotiation within relationships. By making interventions into found materials, Power investigates the space where one person ends, and another begins. This exhibition is a personal and narrative exploration of how we shape, and re-shape, our spatial expectations based upon different relationships and situations.

Exhibition runs June 3 to July 30, 2009

The closing reception for Loveseats for Complicated Relationships will run from 7 to 8 pm on Thursday July 16, 2009 at the window space. The reception will continue after 8 pm nearby at the Auburn Saloon—please join the artist for light snacks, courtesy of the Auburn! The Auburn is located at 163-115 9 Ave. SE.

The +15 Window Space is located on the second level of the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts at 205-8 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB.

BASE CAMP - CALGARY

TRUCK GALLERY PRESENTS:

Base Camp

SHOWCASING WORK BY

Alexandre David, Atom Deguire, Michael Fernandes & Ashley Neese

You and a guest are cordially invited** to the opening reception of Base Camp.

Addressing contemporary art practice as a technique for reflecting upon and intervening in public space, TRUCK Gallery in Calgary will present a series of projects by Canadian and international artists during the month of July 2009, which take place entirely outside of the gallery space. The gallery space itself—as opposed to being an exhibition venue—will instead take on the role of a base camp. This will offer the artists involved in the exhibition a place to develop elements of their project, present documentation regarding their work, and engage visitors to the gallery in dialogue concerning art making and public space. Through this process the meaning and purpose of the gallery will be shifted, allowing TRUCK to contextualize and support practices that might otherwise be challenging to present within the traditional frameworks of an exhibition.

Exhibition runs From July 1 until July 30, 2009

Opening reception is Friday July 17 @ 8pm

BESTIARIES - MONTRÉAL

Montreal based artist Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo offers a sublime and blood drenched vision of Aztec spirituality and the recent history of violence in his native country of El Salvador. Ramirez Castillo’s multilayered mixed media drawings on mylar stem from a cultural tradition of storytelling, here the artist assembles his own repertoire of icons and emblematic characters forming the allegorical works of Bestiaries.

SITE GALLERY - SHEFFIELD

Nicolas Moulin Blanklümdermilq
FREE ADMISSION - ALL WELCOME!
Exhibition: 13 June – 1 August 2009

Site Gallery is pleased to present the first UK solo exhibition Blanklümdermilq by Berlin-based artist Nicolas Moulin. Shortlisted for this year’s prestigious Prix Marcel Duchamp, Moulin began a three-month residency at the University of Sheffield in February 2009 and the exhibition at Site will show a range of his recent works in video, photography, sculpture and sound including two new commissions.

Moulin is fascinated by strange worlds, be they the vast, deserted landscapes of his Novomond series or his disturbing VIDERPARIS; large-scale photographs of apparently familiar Paris streets, where the facades have been concreted over to a height of several metres. His current interest in the built environment and the way people are conditioned and manipulated by the buildings and the spaces that surround them forms the context of the exhibition. Inspired by the sci-fi universe of Philip K Dick and the dystopian other world of J G Ballard, Moulin’s work speaks of a landscape shaped by urban and technological mythologies.
