DAVID HOCHBAUM - BERLIN

Garden Of The Dispossessed - New Mixed Media works by David Hochbaum.

Also featuring Myths, Omens and Misunderstandings - Ver Mar in The Vault.

Reception for the artists October 9th at 7 p.m.
After his last solo show at Strychnin Gallery Berlin in November 2008, American artist David Hochbaum is now back with new works – this time going back to his roots in the darkroom. Presenting mostly black and white works based on photographs, Hochbaum’s preoccupation with houses, labyrinthine streets and cityscapes is brought to a new level in these carefully layered works. Ver Mar, whose sculptures of oceanic mythological creatures have already been seen in a few group shows at Strychnin Gallery, is showing a full-blown installation in Europe for the first time in The Vault, Strychnin’s exhibition room reserved for special occasions.

HUSKKMITNAVN -

Fra vugge til grav/ From the cradle to the grave. Soloshow by HuskMitNavn

All one's life in one exhibition!

It is a great pleasure to present the second soloexhibition of HuskMitNavn (RememberMyName) at Charlotte Fogh Contemporary. In more than 100 photocollages, drawings, paintings and an orchestrated funeral, the anonymeous artist, HuskMitNavn, describes our pathway through life. From the maternity ward to school, dancefloor, workplace and to the last breath.

The exhibition is for all of those, whose lives are too short for art, but still are missing the great picture!

HuskMitNavn is known for working within various genre; from the streets to the galleries, comics, T-shirts to Legosculptures. His familiar line and subtle humour has placed the artist as one of the most characteristic artists in Denmark.

During the past 8 years HuskMitNavn has exhibited at various places in Denmark and Internationally - from housefronts and underground galleries to Museum of Modern Art in New Mexico. His latest show was at LaViolaBank Gallery in New York and Street Art Inspiration at Vejle Art Museum in the spring 2009.

We are looking forward to seeing you

ECHO - SAN FRANCISCO

ECHO: Eight San Francisco Artists Respond to Surrealist Masterworks

Gallery Reception
October 08, 2009
6:00 to 8:00 pm

Echo is the first exhibition at Frey Norris Gallery to exhibit the important Surrealist masterworks in the gallery's Annex alongside artwork from the contemporary gallery. We have suggested a painting or sculpture by eight important Surrealists to eight of our Bay Area artists and asked them to respond or invent around the resonances between their own interests and the content and ideas in the historical piece. The result will be pairings, one historical with one new piece, that synthesize art from 1939 to 2009. This project highlights the often misunderstood or overlooked ideas of the historical artists, demonstrating their foresight in creating art that projects a timeless power and mystery. Similarly, the pairings present contemporary artists with a challenge, creating a bridge that will measure their visions against artwork by some of the most storied artists of the last century.

Participating San Francisco Bay Area artists are Susannah Bettag, Kate Eric, Rodney Ewing, Michal Gavish, Joshua Hagler, Dana Harel, Hayv Kahraman and Mary Anne Kluth. These will appear with Surrealist artworks by Leonora Carrington, Max Ernst, Leonor Fini, Gunther Gerszo, Wilfredo Lam, Wolfgang Paalen, Dorothea Tanning and Remedios Varo. A wide range of objects, including paintings, drawings and mixed media sculptures will be included in the exhibition.

FROM L.A. TO TEHRAN - NEW YORK

From L.A. to Tehran: Mapping the Transnational State of Contemporary Iranian Art

Artists: Amir H Fallah, Roya Falahi, Asad Faulwell and Shadi Ghadirani
Essay by Maymanah Farhat
Dates: Oct 6th – Oct 31st 2009
Opening reception: Oct 6th 2009, 6: 30 – 8:30 pm
Venue: The Guild, NY

The Guild Art Gallery presents From LA to Tehran: Mapping the Transnational State of Contemporary Iranian Art featuring works by artists Amir H Fallah, Roya Falahi, Asad Faulwell and Shadi Ghadirani. The show is accompanied by a text contextualizing the works of these artists within and outside of the conditions that currently surround Iran.

Maymanah Farhat provides an interesting and engaging look at the works of these artists, three of whom are based in LA while the other works in Tehran. Farhat explains:

Although the epicenter of contemporary Iranian culture lies in Tehran, its artists are active all over the globe. From its pioneering modernist painters to its cutting-edge conceptual artists, the peripheries of Iranian art are seemingly endless, having made significant waves in the international scene over the past decade. Propelling this borderless phenomenon is a dynamic group of artists and curators whose work remains in constant exchange with events “back home” in the republic.

In Los Angeles, which contains one of the largest populations of Iranians in diaspora, this is most visible with the generation that immigrated to or was born in the US shortly after the outbreak of the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and the onset of the Iran-Iraq war in 1980. With an estimated 72,000 Iranian-Americans living in the greater Los Angeles area, the city has become an important satellite of Iranian culture….

While artists in diaspora are confronted with the negotiation of various cultural trajectories, those in Iran face an equally complex environment, with a political atmosphere that is magnified to extremes in every aspect of life. There the push and pull between government-sanctioned culture and a population that is all too well-versed in the latest global trends in art, technology and fashion makes for a unique, if not contradiction-filled, brand of twenty-first century society.

The show opens Oct 6th 2009 at The Guild, New York with an opening reception between
6:30 – 8:30 pm. The exhibition will continue to Oct 31st.

HOMOLOGOUS FIELDS - CALGARY

TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary Presents:

Homologous Fields

Showcasing work by:

Dil Hildebrand (Montréal) & Tyler Los-Jones (Calgary)

Exhibition Runs from October 9, 2009 through to November 5, 2009

Opening reception: Friday, October 9 at 8:00 PM

In Homologous Fields Hildebrand and Los-Jones both employ technical ingenuity to disrupt traditional forms in painting and sculpture to accentuate the error of interpretation by the viewer. The end result allows for an expanded conceptual and visual experience that suggests that the confluence of the parts reveals a greater whole that finds its sum within the substance of the viewer.

Dil Hildebrand

Dil Hildebrand was born in Winnipeg, Canada. He obtained his MFA at Concordia University, Montréal in 2008. In 2006 he won the RBC Canadian Painting Competition. Dil will have solo exhibitions this coming May, 2010, at Pierre-Francois Ouellette art contemporain in Montreal, and at YYZ in Toronto, October 2010. He lives and works in Montreal.

Tyler Los-Jones

Tyler Los-Jones is a practicing artist in Calgary and credits his upbringing in the Rocky Mountains as a major influence on his work. He graduated from the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2007 with a BFA in painting. Due to spending much of his life in Alberta, he is actively trying to do spend time near as many large bodies of water as possible. He is currently planning a series of site-specific urban exhibitions, and is working on a new collection of drawings.
