A NEW VANGUARD - NEW YORK

Planning and collating this exhibition, the second collaboration between Saffronart and The Guild, has been a delight and an important learning experience. Following in the footsteps of our 2004 show, Generation I, it is our endeavor to once again offer a glimpse of the artists and artworks at the very forefront of India’s diverse contemporary art practices.

In his essay for the Catalog Divakar V explains:

The imperative to title this essay as “Band of Outsiders” is surely keeping in mind the famous film of Jean-Luc Godard by the same name. I am using the film’s 'script' as a conceptual framework for the show and am using the film itself as a script for structuring my essay. By freely taking some shots/ scenes from the film I would try to put the show in a context relevant to my propositions. Since Godard made this film on the pulp fiction based Hollywood B movies I found it as the most suitable context to write on a show which is being showcased in America. Like the characters in his film the artists in this show are in many ways outsiders other than really being ‘Non-American’…

I would try to investigate the linguistic traits these artists engage with, which may enable us in understanding the concepts and ideas each of the artist deal with. It seems that all of the artists have a discomfort with the reality being represented around them. There is also the possibility that even the dissent itself has been institutionalized by the respective christening forces of the market! Might be there is also the possibility that the stakes being high in the art field, the competence is proved only by rejecting all the consumable inscriptions the surface generally carries along.

‘Here I would not digress anymore on these aspects and let the viewer/ readers decide on those for themselves.’

Each work in this exhibition offers a unique perspective on the negotiations and struggles of present day life, across the various stages on which it plays out, from the intimate to the public, the village to the megalopolis. It has been a pleasure working with the eighteen artists - ASHUTOSH BHARADWAJ, ABIR KARMAKAR, REMEN CHOPRA, K.P. REJI, BALAJI PONNA, GIGI SCARIA, KIRAN SUBBAIAH, SATHYANAND MOHAN, LAVANYA MANI, VED GUPTA, RAKHI PESWANI, LOKESH KHODKE, SUMEDH RAJENDRAN, PRAJAKTA PALAV AHER, ARUN KUMAR - who have contributed works to the show, and it gives us great satisfaction to bring these works to new audiences outside of India. The works in this exhibition, ranging from large-scale paintings and installations to sculptures and interactive videos, will be shown at both Saffronart and The Guild in New York. We look forward to welcoming you to the Preview on Wednesday 16th September at Saffronart from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.

MIKE STILKEY - DENVER

Mike Stilkey, "Words Fail Me"
September 18th - October 10th, 2009
Opening Reception on Friday, September 18th from 7 - 10 PM.

David B. Smith Gallery is proud to present Words Fail Me, a solo exhibition of new work by artist Mike Stilkey. This series, featuring abstract figurative paintings and mixed-media sculptures, will be on display from September 18, 2009 through October 10, 2009. A reception for the artist will be held on Friday, September 18th, 2009 from 7 PM to 10 PM.

Utilizing a mix of ink, colored pencil, paint and lacquer, Mike Stilkey’s work features a melancholic and at times whimsical cast of characters, with an aesthetic reminiscent of Weimer-era German expressionism. Inhabiting an ambiguous environment, his subjects convey a lingering sense of loss and longing. Stilkey reaches beyond the formal confines of painting and drawing, using such materials as record covers, book pages and book covers to create the spaces in which his characters exist. The artist’s work melds the visual world with the literal. Examining the limitations and interchangeability of the communicative process, Stilkey’s work reinvents the canvas to push boundaries between words, visual art and music.

In addition to his body of work, Stilkey will be creating a large-scale installation for Words Fail Me. This sculpture will bring the artist’s goal of intertwining the visual, literary and musical full circle.

Los Angeles Native Mike Stilkey’s work has been exhibited in art fairs and galleries throughout the world, including exhibitions in Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Switzerland.

SARAH WILLIAMS - DALLAS

SARAH WILLIAMS: NIGHT VISION

opening, Saturday, September 12, 6-8pm

Marty Walker Gallery is pleased to introduce Sarah Williams: Night Vision –an exhibition of oil paintings from Williams’ ‘Night Series’ -exhibition opens Saturday September 12, 6-8 PM.

Williams’ ongoing experiments with place have most recently culminated in the oil on panel Nightscapes series. The artist grapples with the formal aspects of artificial light and atmosphere while seeking conceptually to captivate the viewer with ethereal yet banal locales on the fringes of urbanity.

This pairing makes for lighted structures of bus barns, old homes, or gas stations that in their seemingly realist rendering suggest familiarity and even history. However, the dark and muted surroundings of slick black streets and starless skies characterize these composite landscapes as unusual at once. This tendency is heightened as artificial light from sometimes uncanny angles points to a presence that only exists beyond the canvas. The viewer is left to navigate these sites and their meaning on their own.

Recent University of North Texas graduate, Sarah Williams received her Masters of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing. In addition, Williams has exhibited at 500X, where she is also a member.

JOYCE LINDEMULDER - COURTENAY

Wednesday September 16 at 3:30pm

Joyce Lindemulder presents:

Joyce Lindemulder is a 4th year student at Emily Carr University at the NIC campus. Joyce has received scholarships and awards, including the Emily Carr University Achievement Scholarship in recognition of her high academic standing this past year. Joyce has participated in several group shows in the valley and is part of the upcoming “On Second Thought” group show at the Muir in October. Joyce lives in Courtenay with her man.

“Hidden in Plain Sight”
Have you ever heard the expression, “Hidden in plain sight?” Lindemulder states that we are so saturated with imagery about women, that often we fail to notice the message that is taken in about men and masculinity. Taking a brief look at the representation of women, the presentation will then focus on the general depiction of men in historical art works through to contemporary advertising and media.

ALLISON SCHULNIK - NEW YORK CITY

We, at Mike Weiss Gallery, have been working with the editors of Border Crossings Magazine all summer and I am excited to share the result; a beautiful eight page spread. Allison is featured among a handful of bright young artists in this latest issue which focuses on painters and is out on news stands now

Allison Schulnik will be participating in the group exhibition Baker’s Dozen at the Torrance Art Museum
in Torrance, CA beginning September 19th. Baker’s Dozen is an annual survey round-up of 13 artists who have made an impression over the past year and reflect the strengths of contemporary practice as seen at various galleries and spaces throughout Los Angeles.

Allison Schulnik is being featured in the group exhibition Small Is Beautiful at Seomi & Tuus Gallery
in Seoul, Korea. By leaving out large works the show focuses on an ethereal smallness that exudes mystery, beauty, and power. Some of the other artists included in this exhibition are: Damien Hirst, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Ed Rushca, Andy Warhol. The show will be on view September 1st through 30th.

The Harris Art Gallery of The University of La Verne
presents Psychic Hearts, a group exhibition of painters from Los Angeles and New York whose work blurs the distinction between memory and fiction inviting the exploration of altered realities. The artists featured are Angela Dufresne, Kristine Moran, Max Presneill and Allison Schulnik. The show runs from September 8th through October 8th.

Other upcoming group shows that Allison Schulnik will be exhibiting in are La Femme at McClain Gallery
in Houston, TX on October 15th through January 2nd, 2010 and Fixed Chaos at Montserrat Gallery

Giant Robot is proud to host Long Time Listener, First Time Caller, an art show featuring new work by Team Macho. Team Macho is a collaborative illustration and fine art effort composed of Lauchie Reid, Chris Buchan, Nicholas Aoki, Jacob Whibley, and Stephen Appleby-Barr. The Toronto-based group uses all media (excepting digital), and its work crosses a multitude of boundaries in terms of conception and application. Pieces are rarely pre-planned, and only take form through the artists seeing each other at work. The end results are always surprising, witty, and pleasing in unexpected ways. Lately, Team Macho has been working toward a more finished look, with effort being put toward older modes of painting such as oils and airbrushing. See their works @ Magic Pony too!

Long Time Listener, First Time Caller will feature new work with the focus, as always, being to explore the collaborative process, as well as a number of classic prints.

A reception for Team Macho will be held from 6:30 to 10:00 on Saturday, September 19. For more information about the artists, GRNY, or Giant Robot magazine, please contact:
