Linda Walton is exhibiting at CVAG as part of a group show titled “Shell of the Earth”, which examines our natural environment in a variety of media. Walton’s body of work consists of ceramics, photography and textiles that address the recent desiccation of Barnesl Lake (home of the western painted turtle and the spade foot toad, both blue listed animals) in the Kamloops area.

In this talk with accompanying images, Walton will speak about how imagination functions in her work and how ideas can be communicated in many media. She will discuss the content, the choices she made, and why mistakes are important. She will also speak about visual texture, as it is important to this particular body of work; composition – leading the viewer to the heart of the piece; feedback – when it is helpful and intention – the exploration, clarification and communication of her work.

Linda Walton was born in the South of England and holds an art degree from the Berkshire College of Art followed by an Art Teaching Diploma from the Leicester University, specializing in Painting and Ceramics. She came to BC in 1974, and taught Fine Arts at Thompson Rivers University for 30 years, moving to Black Creek in 2005. Her ceramics have been exhibited in England, San Francisco, Chicago, Sydney, Australia and Canada.

SHOS N TELL - COURTENAY

Show N Tell is every Wednesday at CVAG from 3:30pm – 4:30pm, is open to the public and free or by donation.

Lost Boys recently moved to a new space in Tin Town, and are a creative house specializing in the design and execution of the finest quality digital effects and animation. If you are interested in VFX design (visual effects for TV, film, games, etc.) , 2D and 3D effects, compositing, digital matte painting and animation, this presentation will be interesting.

About Mark Benard:
Born and raised in the Comox Valley, Mark Bénard worked with Miramax, MGM, Electronic Arts, Walt Disney, Coca-Cola, Bacardi, Toyota and REM prior to starting 'Lost Boys Learning: School of Visual Effects' in Courtenay. His experience includes on-set VFX supervision, directing short films, 3D, compositing and VFX design.

Behind the Scenes - Visual Effects
Bénard will talk about how he and his students at Lost Boys Learning created a whimsical montage of animated chrome balls that traverse through recognizable locations around the Comox Valley. See how 3D modeling and animation, combined with scenes shot on a Nikon D90, can create a short visual effects film. Julia Crucil - The Map as Art

About Julia:
After teaching high school English and Social Studies for fifteen years, Julia Crucil quit her job and enrolled in the Fine Arts Program at North Island College. Now, entering her fourth and final year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts through Emily Carr University, she has been returning to her academic roots, exploring topics in literary criticism, historiography, cultural theory, social psychology, and criminology as they apply to visual arts. In real life, Crucil has a brilliant and funny husband who is in deeply lost in his Master's thesis, two 'tween step-children, and a penchant for traveling rivaled only by her love of a unique microbrew.

The Map as Art:
This art talk will discuss the ways contemporary and historical artists are using concepts in geography and the language of maps and geographical diagrams, towards the end of global awareness. We may examine the work of:

What is at Show N Tell this week?
Show N Tell at Comox Valley Art Gallery on Wednesday October 7 features local artist Kelly Gough presenting “Lost and Found”. This weekly art education series comes in the form of a digital slideshow and telling the stories that go with it. Once in awhile the gallery will present a visual arts themed film or the gallery staff will present an art talk. Show N Tell is every Wednesday at CVAG from 3:30pm – 4:30pm, is open to the public and free or by donation.

About Kelly Gough
After 22 years of service, Gough retired in the Comox Valley from the Canadian Forces in 2005, although she has lived on Vancouver Island over 16 years. Her art is drawn primarily from her work as a Military Social Worker and as a person living with Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Kelly is currently completing her BFA at Emily Carr University, NIC and plans to present images and a short film from a project called “Lost and Found” for her Show N Tell session. She considers herself a performance and sculptural artist. She also loves to sing and laugh. Gough says “I’m not middle-aged yet cause I hope to live well past my hundredth birthday and still be making Art!! I’m always looking for ways to communicate my concerns to a larger audience. I try to do this with humor. This project reminded me that there is always one small thing a person can do to help their little corner of the world.”

Joyce Lindemulder is a 4th year student at Emily Carr University at the NIC campus. Joyce has received scholarships and awards, including the Emily Carr University Achievement Scholarship in recognition of her high academic standing this past year. Joyce has participated in several group shows in the valley and is part of the upcoming “On Second Thought” group show at the Muir in October. Joyce lives in Courtenay with her man.

“Hidden in Plain Sight”
Have you ever heard the expression, “Hidden in plain sight?” Lindemulder states that we are so saturated with imagery about women, that often we fail to notice the message that is taken in about men and masculinity. Taking a brief look at the representation of women, the presentation will then focus on the general depiction of men in historical art works through to contemporary advertising and media.

What is Show N Tell?
Starting September 9th 2009, CVAG introduces its informal lecture / forum series titled “Show N Tell at CVAG”. The Show N Tell takes place every Wednesday afternoon at the gallery, from 3:30pm to 4:30pm, open to the public and its free to attend, though donations are graciously accepted.

PUBLIC GALLERY:
AFFECTATION - staged photography Susan Bozic (Vancouver BC)
Susan Bozic is a visual artist who lives and works in Vancouver. She received her BFA, with distinction from Concordia University in Montreal, majoring in photography and minoring in cinema. Her work has been exhibited in Canada and in the US in non-profit and commercial galleries. Working primarily in black and white, her subjects have included the male body, nature and taxidermy animals. She is interested in producing work that quesions viewers perceptions by creating articial constructs within familiar settings. The cycles of life, death and rebirth are also prevalent themes in her images. She is a recipient of both Canada Council for the Arts and BC Arts Council grants.

FUR PERSONS & STRUCTURAL PARODIES IN CLAY - Paintings of dogs by Jessica Titley (Courtenay BC) and ceramics by Martha and Gordon James (Quadra Island BC)
Jessica Titley obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Lethbridge under the guidance of international artists Janet Cardiff and Susan Schuppli in 1999. Now living in Courtenay, she has picked up the brushes again, and as a pianist, ceramicist, conceptual, and new media artist, she pushes pigments hoping to have found her new home. Her vivid & colourful portraits of dogs are striking, contemporary & interesting.

Martha James (Quadra Island) received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Calgary in 1976. After moving to Quadra Island with her husband, Gordon James, they established James Pottery. The studio and gallery allow her to work and display the functional and sculptural ceramics, drawings and photographs that she creates. She has also exhibited her work nationally and internationally. Martha creates whimsical vessels.

Gordon James (Quadra Island) started playing with clay and melting bottles during his early teens in his mom’s “ceramics” studio in our Calgary basement. He later studied at the Alberta College of Art, where he became interested in painting and printmaking as well as pottery. After he and his wife graduated in 1976, they moved to Quadra Island and set up the first studio. Gordon's work are playful structures based on the human body.

WINDOW GALLERY:
BIG GARDEN CITY - Installation by Shawn Shepherd (Victoria BC)
Shawn Shepherd was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Photography, skateboarding and fresh air propelled Shawn to move to Victoria, BC in 1990. He is primarily self-taught with an informal education sourced from local artists, books and travels to art museums in France, Italy, Mexico, USA and Canada. Shawn is a multimedia artist whose work investigates aspects of popular culture such as human identity and information trends. Shawn currently works and resides in Victoria.

PUBLIC GALLERY: A Measured Act – Norman Takeuchi (Ottawa ON)

A Japanese Canadian National Museum Touring Show - Takeuchi's drawings and paper assemblages share a personal view, seen through Sansei (third generation Japanese Canadian) eyes, into the interment of Japanese Canadians. This show is an installation of five life-size paper kimono named after internment camps, and six charcoal drawings depicting objects from memories of the internment.

After graduating from the Vancouver School of Art in 1962 with a painting scholarship, Norman Takeuchi moved to London, England to concentrate on painting and exhibiting. A year later he returned to Canada and settled in Ottawa to work as an exhibition designer until 1996 when he left his design career to become a full-time artist. He has since participated in many solo and group exhibitions and his work is represented in public and private collections in Canada and abroad.

ARTS & CRAFT GALLERY: The Second Path – Chinese brush paintings by Andy Lou (Victoria BC) and wood sculpture by Marco Montess (Comox Valley BC)

Andy Shutse Lou was born and raised in China and received a Master degree of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas. Since 1988, he has taught Foundation Drawing I and II courses at Department of Art, the University of North Texas, U.S.A.; Chinese Brush Painting courses at the University of British Columbia; Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria in British Columbia. Since 2001, Andy has been teaching Oriental Brush Painting Workshop (Summer School of the Visual Arts) at the Red Deer College, Alberta. His mixed media cross-cultural landscape theme paintings have been exhibited and collected widely in Canada, U.S.A. and China. Andy is also a co-author of three books on brush painting.

“My paintings are personal investigations into the interaction between Eastern and Western culture. They express how I see and feel about my subject; how I interpret it intuitively and spiritually by using visual language. I continue to pursue a personal direction in expanding the limits of Chinese Brush Painting to challenge the conservatism of traditional art and to push the self-imposed limits of conventional painting.”

WINDOW GALLERY: What Are the Chances? Paintings by Kate Hemenway (Vancouver BC)

Kate Hemenway is a graduate of the Emily Carr University (formerly ECIAD) and has studied in Italy with the Emily Carr /Florence exchange program. She has exhibited in various locations in the lower mainland.

“I work in the borderland between art and science. Statistics, mathematics, and chance are among my neighbours. I use dice throws to randomize a field of similar shapes. Often I will explore global indicators of well being. Sometimes I just lilke to show various probability distributions. The result is a body of work of paintings that look like fields of multicoloured jellybeans. They can be viewed just as they are, or, if one is more curious, the title of each piece will give the viewer something to think about. Chance not only plays a role in health, but also in physics, genetics, accidents, lotteries, and the environments in to which we are born. This both fascinates and frightens me. I realize I do not have as much control over life as I would wish. It threatens the modern myth of free will. I also have learned to respect statisticians. They share the artist's impulse to create order from chaos.”
