NATALYA LASKIS - MIAMI

Natalya Laskis: American Odyssey

Natalya Laskis first solo exhibition: American Odyssey

Fredric Snitzer is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by Miami artist Natalya Laskis.

American Odyssey is a reflection on research of the American psyche, which the artist explores in a historical fashion.

Natalya Laskis has discovered a legacy of risk inherit in the American culture. Simple pleasures peppered with ever-present danger have always existed. Like Ulysses, one must dare to take that first step into the unknown in-order to experience adventure along the way. Facing the temptation of sirens, the potential for drowning, the perilousness of modern day monsters, all for the sake of joy.

In this American Odyssey, life's simple pleasures are readily available to all, but commonly overlooked. The comfort of friendship, the warmth of a bonfire, the merriments of inebriation, and even the excitement of revelry are sometimes taken for granted.

Focusing on energy with an aggressive approach to color, Natalya Laskis's paintings are filled with simplicity. Her manipulation of perspective through the brush strokes carries the viewer into the gesture of the artist's impulsiveness.

Natalya Laskis graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland and New World School of the Arts, Miami, Florida. Her work has been included in group shows at the Fredric Snitzer Gallery Miami, FL and The Fireplace Project, East Hampton, NY among other.

Statement:

"I was almost killed in my country, I was tortured, I was arrested on 2 occasions, I was a student at the National Salvadorian University. It wasn't a pretty sight. It was a difficult experience. I am putting this in a non-graphic way. I don’t want to make you sad. I want you to see that people change after so many years of being here. I am happy. I have found some peace in my heart after those horrible experiences in prison, which included no food, no sleeping, no water...... being beaten up by 7 soldiers, although, I couldn't see anybody. The first time I was put into a torture chamber, they put me on a chair and I was blindfolded. I was hand cuffed in the back. There was a minute of silence... complete silence... before they started to beat me up. It
was at that point, when I could feel them around me. The breathing of these... people, I would call them people, I want to say another word, but I won't use it.

These are the words of a refugee artist from El Salvador who is part of..

La Petite Mort Gallery Oct 10 to 15
Opening Oct 10 7-10pm

Tompalski's family emigrated to Canada from Odessa Ukraine and Warsaw Poland to escape the national and social discrimination found in Eastern Europe in the late 1800's. Born in Saskatoon, she began her career as a medical doctor and psychiatrist, working with refugees, artists, couples and families. She became increasingly intrigued by the act of documenting psychology on canvas and video in a style she describes as psychological realism. Her brush strokes and bold colours
evoke strong emotions that depict expressive faces tangled in a world of colourful turbulence. "The work is developed in an exploratory fashion," she says. "Paintings and drawings are sometimes torn-up and reassembled with a collage of mixed media elements in an effort to
create a fresh view of the subject. Basically, I'm trying to make psychologically informed images that stimulate curiosity about the conflicting desires inside all of us."

Sherry Tompalski and Graham Thompson gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the City of Ottawa, the Ontario Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts.

Thank you,

Guy Berube, director

NAOMI KINNEAR KING & KEVIN - BRISTOL

Nom

Naomi Kinnear King studied Fine Art Print at Norwich School of Art and Design, then moved to Brighton, then Melbourne and now London, exhibiting along the way as well as making commisioned illustrations. Her art has always been focused on creating female characters, the world around them and the narrative this creates.

Nom Kinnear King, from Norfolk (England), studied Fine art at Norwich School of art and design. Nom graduated in 2004 and has since been exhibiting her paintings and drawings in Europe and now Australia, most recently in the 696 Gallery, Melbourne. Her characters created in pencil, acrylic and oil, live within a mixing pot of magical fascinations of the imagination. Stories that lie behind the work are acted out by willing friends, collaged with collected imagery, painted then created in to books of each series. Other areas of artwork have been record covers posters, t-shirt design, and magazine illustration.

Her latest series is based on the world within a gypsy troop of tattered performers. Living life within the magic is beautiful, but you must keep moving as a dark shadow follows ever closer.

Kevin Earl Taylor

Having grown up within the climate surrounding skateboarding and punk rock culture in the mid-80s, Kevin developed a dynamic interest in Art, Music and the creative process in general. Following receipt of a B.F.A. in Illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design in 1994, he began to further explore the possibilities of artistic creation through experimentation and improvisational technique.

While primarily a painter, Kevin also enjoys working with kinetic communicative forms such as film, sound and sculpture. Recent US exhibitions of his work include dates in Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco; as well as internationally in Japan and Sweden. In April 2006, deciding his 33rd year to be significant and feeling the need for personal challenge, Kevin left his rural 1.5 acre estate in Charleston, for a modest studio apartment in San Francisco, CA. Since his relocation, he has exhibited frequently, and continues adding dates to the schedule. In years to come, Kevin intends to increase his presence and recognition within the global art theater, enabling him to travel often and take sporadic hiatus amongst the marsh grasses, pluff mud and under crowded confines of Carolina.

Knifesmith have previously shown limited edition prints of of Kevin's work but this will be a rare opportunity to see originals in the UK as well a new print editions.
