HOMOLOGOUS FIELDS - CALGARY

TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary Presents:

Homologous Fields

Showcasing work by:

Dil Hildebrand (Montréal) & Tyler Los-Jones (Calgary)

Exhibition Runs from October 9, 2009 through to November 5, 2009

Opening reception: Friday, October 9 at 8:00 PM

In Homologous Fields Hildebrand and Los-Jones both employ technical ingenuity to disrupt traditional forms in painting and sculpture to accentuate the error of interpretation by the viewer. The end result allows for an expanded conceptual and visual experience that suggests that the confluence of the parts reveals a greater whole that finds its sum within the substance of the viewer.

Dil Hildebrand

Dil Hildebrand was born in Winnipeg, Canada. He obtained his MFA at Concordia University, Montréal in 2008. In 2006 he won the RBC Canadian Painting Competition. Dil will have solo exhibitions this coming May, 2010, at Pierre-Francois Ouellette art contemporain in Montreal, and at YYZ in Toronto, October 2010. He lives and works in Montreal.

Tyler Los-Jones

Tyler Los-Jones is a practicing artist in Calgary and credits his upbringing in the Rocky Mountains as a major influence on his work. He graduated from the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2007 with a BFA in painting. Due to spending much of his life in Alberta, he is actively trying to do spend time near as many large bodies of water as possible. He is currently planning a series of site-specific urban exhibitions, and is working on a new collection of drawings.

BASE CAMP - CALGARY

TRUCK GALLERY PRESENTS:

Base Camp

SHOWCASING WORK BY

Alexandre David, Atom Deguire, Michael Fernandes & Ashley Neese

You and a guest are cordially invited** to the opening reception of Base Camp.

Addressing contemporary art practice as a technique for reflecting upon and intervening in public space, TRUCK Gallery in Calgary will present a series of projects by Canadian and international artists during the month of July 2009, which take place entirely outside of the gallery space. The gallery space itself—as opposed to being an exhibition venue—will instead take on the role of a base camp. This will offer the artists involved in the exhibition a place to develop elements of their project, present documentation regarding their work, and engage visitors to the gallery in dialogue concerning art making and public space. Through this process the meaning and purpose of the gallery will be shifted, allowing TRUCK to contextualize and support practices that might otherwise be challenging to present within the traditional frameworks of an exhibition.

Exhibition runs From July 1 until July 30, 2009

Opening reception is Friday July 17 @ 8pm

TRADING CARD WORKSHOP - CALGARY

TRUCK is proud to present local artist Cat Schick as she teams with This is My City to host an Artist Trading Card (ATC) workshop for members of Calgary’s homeless population. ATCs are miniature works of art, created on 2" x 3" inch card stock. There are no restrictions as to medium. One does not need to be a classically trained artist to make trading cards—only have an idea, and the will to express it.

This is My City (TMC) was initiated by the City of Calgary's Arts & Culture Department to facilitate engagement of homeless citizens in art making, building the program through a team approach with local arts groups and artist-mentors. To date, TMC has begun the development of programs with the Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre, The Mustard Seed, CUPS (Calgary Urban Project Society) and the Calgary Homeless Foundation.

For more information about This is My City: Artist Trading Card Workshops, please visit http://tmcatc.wordpress.com.

Cat Schick graduated from ACAD in 1987 with a diploma in Photographic Arts. After living and exhibiting in Calgary for a few years, she moved to Zürich, Switzerland in 1990. While there her practice expanded to include installation, assemblage, artists’ books, and artist trading cards. Schick’s photographic work included black and white, Polaroid, and digital. She had several exhibitions in Switzerland as well as Holland, the Czech Republic, and Canada. In 2006 she returned to Calgary.

Through the Artist Trading Card project Schick has co-organized several events and exhibitions, including her own project that invites women from all over the world to participate in a card exchange. Currently she is working as an artist/mentor for the City of Calgary’s homeless artist project called This Is My City, doing ATC workshops, trading sessions and exhibitions with the homeless population. She also sits on the board of EAR Elephant Artist Relief.

CAMPER is TRUCK's Contemporary Art Public Mobile Exhibition Rig -- a 1975 Dodge Empress 19.5 foot motor home, modified to become a portable public exhibition and project space. CAMPER’S mandate is to investigate the places where art, the road, education, and recreation all meet; and to explore these intersections in an inclusive, participation-oriented manner that fosters public education and appreciation of contemporary art practices.

AT VARIANCE - CALGARY

TRUCK GALLERY PRESENTS:

At Variance

SHOWCASING WORK BY

Marcy Adzich, Christine Cheung & Beth Howe

You and a guest are cordially invited** to the opening reception of At Variance.

The transitory concept of ‘Place’ is explored in the three-person exhibition, At Variance. Using the notion of the landscape as a point of departure, Marcy Adzich, Christine Cheung, and Beth Howe explore contradictory ideas of space.

Adzich develops sculptural objects that reference man-made and natural environments, evoking a sense of isolation and dislocation, while Cheung paints the space where one’s consciousness and dreams become slowly intertwined. Through sculpture built from a decidedly ubiquitous and urban material—office photocopy paper—Howe dismantles the way the built environment dictates our travel paths. The imagined and the real collide in this exhibition, creating an alternate sense of place.

Exhibition runs from May 15 to June 18, 2009.

Opening reception is May 15 @ 8 pm.

**The reception is open to members and invited guests; artists will be in attendance. The exhibition will be open to the public, and admission is free.

THE NEON GOD WE MADE - CALGARY

TRUCK GALLERY PRESENTS:

The Neon God We Made

SHOWCASING WORK BY

Keith Murray

Exhibition runs from:
April 3, 2009 through to May 9, 2009

Opening reception: Friday, April 3 at 8:00 PM

Keith Murray, just got married to (him/her)self in Las Vegas. By Elvis. With drag queen flying nuns to witness. Keith is big into weavin' dreams and movin' mountains and shooting lazerbeems. This humanoid likes to wiggle ass around town and/or sit in silence. (s)He also likes to dizzy-do repetitive and meticulous things, sometimes calling it art. Keith's next miracle will be to infuse the world with luminous-neon-lazerlight/liquid-gem-colour from the trans-topian fantasy realms, thus liberating the masses from the diabolical drabness of mushroom, beige and taupe—at least maybe for a moment.

Suffering, bliss...contrast is neat, all binaries cosily nested in the womb of the nondual: form is emptiness, emptiness is form...the ongoing evolving effervescent ever-essence of h(is/er) transdisciplinary art practice, is narcissistic and delusional at best. Yet, Keith hopes the delusion is on the other side of illusion, sexily exalting/miraculously altering the numbness of normal reality...thrusting it up, way up!—into the lofty pan-dimentional vaults of the rainbow-kaleidoscope, unicorn-dream-realm of ULTIMATE REALITY! Yeah yeah sparkle-Kosmos!

[Keith Murray is a transdisciplinary artist/writer/curator working predominantly with film, video, new media and performance. Keith is a native Calgarian and advocates developing culture and building community in the place he calls home. Murray received a BFA in Media Arts and Digital Technologies from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2004. Since 2003, Keith has programmed and created work for Calgary’s Fairy Tales International Queer Film Festival and screened work at festivals and conferences across Canada. In 2005, EMMEDIA nominated Keith for the Calgary Professional Arts Alliance Emerging Artist award, and in 2006, Keith participated in Springboard Dance’s Interrarium Performance Residency at the Banff Centre. Keith is currently Programming and Communications Coordinator at Quickdraw Animation Society in Calgary, also directing the annual Giant Incandescent Resonating Animation Festival (GIRAF). Keith’s most recent new media performance, transcriptions was presented at the 2007 Fluid Movement Arts Festival. In 2008, an exhibition of selected works launches the grand opening of the Erotic Heritage Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada.]
