Donald Woodman: The Rodeo and the West
Join us for an evening celebrating the work of Donald Woodman.

The evening starts at 6pm at The Art Gallery of Calgary with an Artist Talk featuring Donald Woodman, moderated by Senior Art Curator, Marianne Elder. American artist, Donald Woodman photographs small town Rodeos questioning the authenticity of the romanticized West. In capturing the spectacle of man versus wild, Woodman investigates the hypermasculinity of the Western Cowboy.

If you choose to join us, the talk can be followed by the opening reception of Donald Woodman's companion commercial exhibition at Axis Contemporary Art (in Art Central).

THREE OPENINGS - CALGARY

Join The Art Gallery of Calgary on Friday, April 24, 2009 at 7pm for the launch of three three distinct and diverse exhibitions :

Intermediary - Michael Cameron’s paintings combine still motion and frenetic movement. Influenced by the local Alberta landscape and global social environment, Cameron’s process of applying multiple layers of paint creates subtle shifts in colour and depth constructing often tense atmospheres of everyday life.

Sospesi tra Cielo e Terra – Suspended Between Heaven and Earth - Italian artist Vincenzo Calli creates dream-like environments where languid figures of young men and women evoke a sensation of memory. Through the use of Classical Italian light and oblique perspective, Calli produces tension for his sensual figures and sanguine landscapes.

The Filthy Water Grotto is the first major collaborative exhibition by Calgary-based artists Justin Patterson and Stacey Watson. Their grotto of fabric, constructed like a child’s basement fort, acts like a membrane between the conscious an unconscious worlds of imaginative play and dreamlike environments.

Closer To Home in partnership with The Art Gallery of Calgary Present...

KID-OGRAPHY

Kid-ography is a photography based art program. The focus is to capture the imaginations of children and to build confidence, self-esteem and hope. Kid-ography also gives children the opportunity to expand their experiences, thus opening their eyes to other interests and allowing them to grow as people.

From Tuesday, March 31st, to Saturday, April 4th, The Art Gallery of Calgary will be a host to the photography of children involved in this Closer To Home project. Take a moment to check out the artwork of these talented children on the Gallery's Mezzanine level.
