Join us on Thursday, April 16th from 6 – 9 PM for a public reception featuring a wine tasting, a reading by Harriet zinnes and music by the Tim Collins Group- all at the gallery’s Williamsburg location of 293 Grand Street between Roebling and Havemeyer. For more information contact the gallery at 718.218.8939.

Sy Gresser has been sculpting in stone and wood for over 50 years. He believes that art celebrates human existence on a spiritual level and transcends the ideas of religion- any religion as well as the ideas of race. Of his work he is fond of saying, " when I look at a stone if I capture some human warmth and sense of meaning, I feel I have been successful. That is all I ask..." Sy started with a summer carving class at George Washington University and studied further at the Institute of Contemporary Fine Art in Washington, D.C. where he met his mentor, Bill Taylor. Over the years, Mr. Gresser has completed a number of carving residencies at such renowned locations as the Sculpture Studio in Washington, D.C., Yale University, Wesley Theological Seminary, and Mt. Rushmore National Memorial. His sculptures have been exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions throughout the US, Belgium, England and Mexico as well as in the American Embassies in Abu Dhabi, the Fiji Islands, France, India, Madagascar, Nigeria and Switzerland. He exhibits exclusively with Ch'i Contemporary Fine Art in New York. Currently, Mr. Gresser's studio and home is located in Silver Springs, Maryland.

ALICE & HARRIET ZINNES - BROOKLYN

Brooklyn, New York, APril 1, 2009: Ch’i Contemporary Fine Art is pleased to announce two solo shows at the gallery in April, Druid Dreams of the Danaka: Paintings and Drawings by Alice Zinnes. Join us on Thursday, April 16th from 6 – 9 PM for a public reception with the artist at the gallery’s Williamsburg location of 293 Grand Street between Roebling and Havemeyer. Alice will speak about her work at 7pm followed by a reading from Harriet Zinnes new book, Light Light or the Curvatures of the Earth" which features one of Alice's paintings as the cover art. At 8 pm, the Tim Collins Band will be performing. This will beAlice Zinnes’ debut exhibition at Ch’i. The public is invited to attend this event and visit the gallery during regular hours: Wed – Sun 11 AM – 7 PM, and Mon. 9 AM – 5 PM. Also don't forget to join us for the Williamsburg 2nd Friday preview on April 10th from 6 -9pm. For more information contact the gallery at 718.218.8939.

Alice Zinnes’ oil paintings, large charcoal drawings and intimate watercolors contain the spirit of the storyteller in the guise of the abstract adventurer. Provoked to visual explosions by the great Indian epic, The Ramayana, and by Celtic mythologies, they are not illustrations or literal translations, but instead are transformations from myths to mysterious worlds where the boundaries between underworld and waking earth are traversable, terror coexists with joy, and loss must always yield to renewal. Alice Zinnes has been exhibiting her work for over 30 years, including a 25-year retrospective at The Art Center at Queens College. In addition to six solo shows in New York City, Zinnes has also had one person shows at Dartmouth and Swarthmore Colleges. She has been reviewed in the New York Times, New York Newsday, New York Arts Magazine, Art New England, and the Queens Tribune; as well as interviewed on the NPR-affiliated radio station WJFF. Zinnes work is in many public and private collections: in New York City it is at the First Albany Corporation, Frederick Harris, Inc, Alliance Capital, Kaye Insurance, Inc.; in New Jersey it is at Schein Pharmaceuticals; and in Philadelphia it is in the collection of Wolf Block & Solis-Cohen. Alice Zinnes received her BA from Swarthmore College, a Certificate of Merit from the New York Studio School, her MFA from Queens College, CUNY, and attended the Skowhegan School on a full merit scholarship.

THINK.21 at ART BRUSSELS - BRUXELLES

GRAHAM DAY GUERRA - BRUXELLES

Think.21 is pleased to present the work of American artist Graham Day Guerra.

In his latest series, Alpha and Omega, the artist represents an amalgamation of two ideologically and aesthetically opposed subjects. He combines today’s symbols of secular culture with the spiritual ideals and imagery of a previous more pious century.

Multi limbed figures, with superbly toned and athletic bodies, hover above sports stadia. They rise into the air - an ascesion- their forms picked out by banks of flood lighting and observed by an implied crowd in unseen grandstands.

The work abounds with historical reference. Saluting hands allude to David’s Oath of the Horatii and the overall compostions draw on various paintings of the Ascension, and specifically the ecstatic depictions of Mary in paintings such as the rapturous Assumption of the Virgin by Poussin and Tiepolo and Raphael’s last masterpiece, The Transfiguration.

Aside from its obvious reference to Catholicism the drawings also refer to human intelligence and corporeality as the beginning and end of creation. Kuzweil’s precept that the legacy of human intelligence will shape the destiny of the universe is for Guerra the philosophical point of departure for his contemporary and profane creation fantasy. This idea is concisely portrayed in the drawing Entropic Skulls, a piece depicting two human skulls locked in a Mobius strip of self-reflection, which serves as a kind of seed or egg that gives birth to the rest of the forms in the series.

Though intentionaly resembling theistic and devotional imagery, Guerra’s charcoal and graphite drawings are also impious celebrations of a material and human centered universe.

ROBERTO SALETTI - BROOKLYN

April 16 – May 7, 2009

Opening Reception: Thursday, April 16, 6-8PM

(Brooklyn, NY, March 24, 2009) Italian artist Roberto Saletti conjures images from a time and space less defined and more like enigmatic memories with his “partial revelation” darkroom techniques.

Saletti’s photographic explorations go beyond what is captured through his camera lens and begins with the creative work in the darkroom. Stretching the nature of the photographic image, Saletti uses a process of painting developing solution onto the white photograph paper with a rag before exposing the image onto the paper. This technique pushes his original image and creates greater freedom and expressiveness in Saletti’s photographic artwork. Saletti commented, “I have learned to make optimal photos from a technical point of view; then I have realized I was being bored and I pushed to search for greater freedom.”

Like giving movement to a memory, Saletti technique creates images that take flight from the physical time and place where the subject was photographed and become ethereal and haunting. The static subject photographed through the artist lens is stretched to become a dreamlike representation of the subject, unveiling like clouds or smoke signals to the viewer. “What I try to create is images without time, to give life to statues,” Roberto Saletti.
