«Becoming Padme in ISHIILAND» est née de nombreux échanges entre Stephen Sarrazin et le cinéaste-plasticien Katsuhito Ishii, auteur de long-métrages, dont THE TASTE OF TEA, et de la séquence animée de Kill Bill 1 de Quentin Tarantino. Katsuhito propose un assemblage d'éléments qui composent un portrait de l'univers pop Japonais contemporain, du manga et de l'animation sous forme de dessins et objets. Cette exposition présente pour la première fois en Europe le travail plastique de ce créateur. Stephen Sarrazin, critique et commissaire, collaborateur occasionnel d'artistes contemporains et cinéastes, vivant entre Tokyo et Paris, accompagne l'œuvre de Katsuhito Ishii avec sa propre exposition de photographies et vidéos, Becoming Padme.

McDermott & McGough nous feront découvrir leurs toutes dernières peintures de 2008-2009, créées par juxtaposition d’images de films d’après-guerre, nous laissant entrevoir au travers de ces nouvelles oeuvres certains fondements de leur démarche atemporelle si spécifique. Les images, toutes d’origine cinématographique, se superposent l’une sur l’autre sur la toile, selon un principe d’ « écran divisé », comme lors d’une projection où la bande passerait au ralenti pour nous laisser voir plusieurs images à la fois ou une même image répétée plusieurs fois… La découverte d’un accès visuel qui permet d’apprendre comment se comporter et agir… L’exposition prend ici un caractère autobiographique, puisque c’est précisément par les films que les jeunes McDermott et McGough échappaient à la routine et à l’ennui de leur vie de banlieusards dans l’Amérique des années 1950-60. Les films étaient un moyen pour eux de découvrir autre chose que leur environnement immédiat, une ouverture sur un monde « glamour », et un moyen de comprendre comment les gens vivaient dans le passé, même si cette façon de voir était artificielle…

Shirley Kaneda présente neuf nouvelles peintures et huit nouveaux dessins. (Abstraction biomorphique) Ses peintures récentes présentent des compositions de formes colorées fluides, dynamiques, liquides, figées en un moment. Shirley Kaneda est née au Japon. Elle s’est installée à New York en 1970 pour étudier l’art et y réside aujourd’hui. Elle a reçu le Prix de la Fondation Guggenheim en 1999 et expose dans plusieurs villes des Etats-Unis ainsi qu’en Europe. Depuis le début des années 90, Kaneda joue un rôle actif dans la discussion, la promotion et la définition de la peinture de la fin du XXème et XXIème siècles en publiant de nombreux articles sur l’abstraction, des interviews avec des artistes, et en tant que commissaire d’exposition de plusieurs expositions importantes. Shirley Kaneda continue d’explorer les possibilités dynamiques de la peinture contemporaine.

Les travaux de Thomas Léon se déploient principalement à travers la vidéo numérique. L'exposition s'articule autour de -The Time Machine - (2009), installation vidéo inspirée du roman éponyme d'Herbert George Wells (1895). L'installation -The Time Machine - se focalise sur des lieux emblématiques, (la Cité Universitaire Internationale à Paris, les tunnels du métro) envisagés comme décors possibles du récit de Wells. Elle les parcourt et révèle les tensions qui les traversent encore en mêlant à cette déambulation une réflexion sur le territoire et ses représentations à l'ère du numérique. L'installation a été réalisée à l'invitation de Glassbox et de la Cité internationale universitaire de Paris dans le cadre de leur programme "Acteurs Autonomes.

Statement:

"What are you gonna do when you're eighty?", as if any of us had planned that far ahead. Even those of us conscious of the future should be so lucky as to live to be eighty.

People fear the permanence, and the stigma that tattoos are for the marginalized. Forever is word not one of us could ever fully understand, like love and evil it is unquantifiable. We are made of flesh and when we die, our physical presence decays. Even those that believe in an afterlife might agree that it is doubtful you would take your tattoos with you. Like that nifty anorak you love or your favourite diamond earrings, those that believe might tell you that you leave with what you came in with. nothing. and maybe your soul. For some it is this very same longevity and marginalization that attracts them to this form of decoration. People get tattooed to either belong to or to disassociate from a group, often it is a little of both. These days with the hallmark sentiment of television shows pushing the tattoo world into new markets, we forget the perspectives of those that came before. Those artists and laymen who chose to adorn their bodies not to mark the passing of a loved one or to make grand gestures of faith, but those that flouted the public opinion and got tattooed in spite of the name calling.

What sets these tattooed artists apart from the rest of society? Do we have a deeper understanding of our own mortality, choosing to experience all that we desire, without the fear of consequences? or are we merely impulsive and careless? Even though society's attitudes are changing there is still a stigma that surrounds the tattooed; that we are morally vacant and criminals of lesser breeding. On the surface we have all been marked, each with our either small or all encompassing, permanent collections, but we come from every background, rich and poor, formally educated and street smart. Like anyone, our perspectives on life, death and in between unable to escape the influence of our choices in life, and vice versa .

JANA STERBAK, Waiting for high water, installation vidéo

Waiting for High Water invite le spectateur à une promenade surprenante à Venise au moment de l'acqua alta. Présentées sous forme de projection en triptyque dans la grande salle de la Fonderie Darling, les images de cette installation vidéo expérimentale sont filmées à l'aide de trois petites caméras fixées sur la tête d’un Jack Russell nommé Stanley. La musique du claveciniste Alex Weimann, remixée au pas du chien, martèle les images. Nous en sommes réduits à découvrir cette ville mythique par excellence, « Voir Venise et Mourir », par l’œil chaotique et désaxé de trois caméras implantées sur l’animal, sans qu’à aucun moment la bête, ni son acharnement, ne nous soient montrés. Le niveau de la mer montante et celui de notre vision rabaissée au regard du chien proposent une perspective déstabilisante de Venise, de ses résidents et des milliers de touristes qui déambulent sur ses ponts et canaux chaque jour.
Waiting for High Water fait suite à From Here to There, une installation vidéo aussi filmée par Stanley, cette fois sur les rives enneigées du Saint-Laurent, présentée pour la première fois au Pavillon Canadien lors de la 50e édition de la Biennale de Venise en 2003.

Waiting for High Water invites the spectator to take an amazing walk through Venice at acqua alta. A triptych projection in the Darling Foundry’s large gallery, the images from this experimental video installation were filmed by three small cameras affixed to the head of a Jack Russell Terrier named Stanley, while harpsichordist Alex Weimann’s music was synched to its gait. We are forced to discover the mythic Venice, “See Venice, then Die”, through the eccentric, chaotic eye of three cameras mounted on an animal that is never shown. With the water level rising and our line of vision lowered, Venice— with her residents and throngs of tourists in tow— takes on a dizzying perspective.
Waiting for High Water follows From Here to There, a video installation filmed by a camera-toting Stanley on the snowy banks of the St. Lawrence, that was presented at the Canadian Pavilion for the 50th anniversary of the Venice Biennial in 2003.

RHONDA WEPPLER & TREVOR MAHOVSKY, Sun in an Empty Room, Sculptures

Les artistes de Vancouver Rhonda Weppler et Trevor Mahovsky, poursuivent leur recherche en sculpture comme matière vivante, suivant l’inspiration de leur précédente série d’œuvres molles faites d’empreintes de voiture en papier d’aluminium. Ils présentent à la Fonderie Darling, des sculptures évolutives qui prennent une forme aléatoire au fur et à mesure de l’intervention des artistes à même la salle d’exposition. Faites de papier mâché, de farine, d’eau et de pigment, ces sculptures périssables sont graduellement modifiées, colorées et décolorées, marquées et épaissies par l’ajout de couches successives, afin d’évoquer les effets de situations transitoires et l’espace d’interprétation d’objets illusoires. Ainsi une forme reconnaissable à la base glisse peu à peu vers quelque chose qui relèverait plus de l’«informe». Cette évolution mène à une sorte de narration minimaliste qui va à l’encontre du processus de création, soit une «déformation» des œuvres. Ce processus de déconstruction se poursuivra à l’occasion de la présentation de ces mêmes œuvres dans d’autres espaces d’exposition en 2009.
Rhonda Weppler et Trevor Mahovsky collaborent depuis 2003 et ont à leur actif de nombreuses expositions au Canada, aux Etats-Unis et au Japon. Récemment, ils ont été nominés pour le prestigieux prix Sobey pour les Arts.

Vancouver-based artists Rhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky continue to develop their study of sculpture as a living entity following their previous series producing tinfoil casts of cars. Their work at the Darling Foundry is comprised of mutating sculptures of unpredictable forms that live at the mercy of the artists and the exhibition space. Made of papier maché, flour, water, and pigment, these submissive sculptures are, over time, coloured, blanched, scarred, and layered, evoking the effects of transitory phenomena and leaving room for the interpretation of illusory objects. Thus the recognisable form at the basis of each piece grows unrecognisable and ‘aformed’. This evolution becomes a minimalist narrative that grates against the creative process; it is a deformation of the work. The deconstruction will continue after this show at other exhibition spaces throughout 2009.
Rhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky have been collaborating since 2003, and have presented numerous exhibitions in Canada, the United States, and Japan. They were recently nominated for the prestigious Sobey Art Award.

THE BODY POLITIC - BROOKLYN

The Brooklyn Art Collective and Republic are pleased to present The Body Politic, a groupexhibition, curated by BKAC co-directors Tyler Wriston and Ian McGillivray, along with independentcurator, Christine Spangler. The Body Politic will open at Jungle on June 13, 2009 and will feature live performance art as well as musical performances by Anamanaguchi, Buke & Gass, and ASARansom; doors open at 6pm.

In a contemporary climate of conceptualism, art making can often appear wrought with intellectual, philosophical or technological demands. The Body Politic presents a tangible and universal anchor through which artists are able to examine their own consciousness and culture: the human body. The phrase "body politic" has historically served as an analogy in which the human body is used to represent a larger political, philosophical or social whole. In this group exhibition, artists survey the anatomy, physicality, biology, and substance of the human body; its functions and failings, its fervor and vivacity, in order to further extrapolate this idea.

Participating artists include Michael Alan, Emily Barletta, Matt Brennan, Kate Burnet & Dan Woerner, Bill Durgin, Jason Ferguson, Lisa Kellner, Ryan Ketchum, Ian McGillivray, Jennifer Mills, Leemour Pelli, Diana Schmertz, Mireille Vautier, and Bohyun Yoon. For his first exhibition at La Petite Mort Gallery, artist Patrick Evoke has created a series of remarkable portraits that are neither paintings, drawings, prints or photographs, they are an entirely new beast. These beautiful and haunting works are the actual physical records of cosmetics peeled from the faces of heavily "made up" transvestites, drag queens and working women of South East Asia."Each day these individuals look into the mirror and paint a self portrait. They put on a mask and get into character. It from this middle space that these works emerge. In these works, the surreal theatrics of this cosmetic transformation merge with the wrinkles hairs and imperfections of real life. They are as intimate a portrait as one will ever capture.

Patrick Thompson’s installations of painting, wall drawings, printmaking and sculpture, are investigations of the idea of information; explored through mass media, architecture, history and the dynamics of culture, defined equally by their range and their lyrical visual language Highly esteemed for pushing the boundaries of street art, he has painted outdoors under the pseudonym Evoke throughout North and Central America, Europe, and Asia. Thompson is often placed into the "Canadian School" of street artists including Other, Labrona, and Thesis Sahib -- a group known for their inspired improvisations and openness towards freeform mark making.

Thompson’s own creative process develops through a self-coined process he refers to as “mistakism”, whereby the artist allows a memory, feeling, sentence, or some other bite of information to spark the beginning of a particular work. Imagery follows, inspired by the ‘in-between’ places found throughout the Canadian landscape -- converging into dreamlike scenes. This union creates a pictorial space where imaginary characters, forms and marks can interact in a place that is whimsical as well as charged. In 2007, Thompson created "Ishtar Gate" in collaboration with artists Derek Mehaffey and Juan Carlos Noria for; BAC! 07 International Festival of Contemporary Art in Barcelona- Edition VIII. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions worldwide including; The Royal Ontario Museum; Institute for Contemporary Culture in Toronto, Luminato, the Singapore Contemporary Arts Museum, Desert Generation at Artist House Gallery in Jerusalem, Lombardi Gallery in Austin Texas and INOPERABLE Gallery in Vienna Austria.

Wall painting installation work includes Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada, Quest
University in Squamish, British Columbia, Canada, SAW Gallery in Ottawa,

Nicolas Moulin has been involved in a series of public workshops to explore the intersections between the visual arts, urban and public spaces during his residency at the University of Sheffield. This symposium will explore in more depth one of the themes that have emerged during the workshop series - speakers include Christophe Egret, architect currently working on Park Hill, Sheffield, Cllr Tim Rippon Labour Councillor, Arbourthorne Ward and previously Sheffield City Council Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration Culture and Planning, Dr Anna Jorgensen Department of Landscape, University of Sheffield and Dr Steven Gartside MMU, Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design.

Film Screening: AXONOBUILD
Screening throughout Nicolas Moulin's exhibition in the gallery's resource area.

Curated by Esther Johnson, AXONOBUILD is a selection of film and video depicting human interaction with constructed environments. Included is a portrait of the infamous Trellick Tower designed by Ernö Goldfinger; a look at an expatriate Indian community in Brickfield, Malaysia, and the journey of a dissatisfied young girl in her surburban neighbourhood. POP UP! : BALEINE - ANCONA

Martedì 2 giugno alle ore 19.30 tutto il pubblico è invitato a visitare Il Museo della Città di Ancona in Piazza del Plebiscito, trasformato in sede espositiva temporanea di urban art dall’artista italiano Andreco con una istallazione/azione dal titolo “BALENE AD ANCONA. Fuga dal museo” (ingresso libero).

Le balene escono dal Museo. Attraversano le sale, il cortile, la piazza, percorrono le strade della città, annunciate dal ritmo incalzante ed evocativo dei Tamburini di Offagna, per raggiungere lo spazio aperto: il mare. Sulla facciata del Mercato Ittico presso la Fiera della Pesca, ci attende una grande opera. Aperitivo offerto dal Raval di Ancona, drink partner.

L'installazione delle balene è un intervento di poster art che solitamente delinea una fuga da uno spazio espositivo chiuso per arrivare ad un spazio aperto,
o ad un habitat naturale piu' congeniale all'animale. Comunque delinea una transizione, un percorso.” Andreco

Dove: Museo della Città
Il museo di Ancona, dedicato alla sua storia.
E' situato al centro della città storica, con entrata da Piazza del Plebiscito.
Il museo è allestito in una superficie di circa mq.600 e utilizza diversi ambienti recuperati:
spazi già dell'ospedale di S. Tommaso di Canterbury (sec. XIII); locali dell'ex pescheria fondata nel 1817; seminterrati.
I materiali del museo sono costituiti da reperti archeologici, riproduzioni grafiche e fotografiche di edifici, luoghi e personaggi, stampe originali, dipinti, plastici ecc, capaci di richiamare i momenti più significativi della storia di Ancona (dal secondo millenio a.C. ai giorni nostri) e di favorire il confronto tra città antica e città moderna. L'esposizione si articola in quattro sezioni: Dalle origini al Mille. Dal Mille al 1532. Dal 1532 alla fine del Settecento. Dall'occupazione francese all'Unità d'Italia. Lungo il percorso si può usufruire di tre video-guide dedicate allo sviluppo urbano: - dalle origini al Mille - dal Mille al 1532 - dal 1532 al 1860. Quattro video invece sviluppano il tema della città contemporanea, dall'Unità d'Italia al 1960: - Ancona contemporanea I 1860-1900 - Ancona contemporanea II 1900-1922 - Ancona contemporanea III 1922-1944 - Ancona contemporanea IV 1944-1960.

E 'situé au coeur de la ville historique, avec l'entrée de la Piazza del Plebiscito.
Le musée est situé dans une zone d'environ mq.600 et récupérés en utilisant des environnements différents: places déjà à l'hôpital S. Thomas de Canterbury (XIII), le marché aux poissons local fondé en 1817; sols. CHRYSALLIS STAGE - BROOKLYN

Brooklyn, New York, Ch'i Contemporary Fine Art is excited to present Chrysalis Stage, installation and sculpture by Joe Mangrum, the artist's second solo show at the gallery. Join us on Thursday, June 11th from 6 – 9 PM for the opening reception at the gallery's Williamsburg location of 293 Grand Street between Roebling and Havemeyer. The evening will feature an artist talk and musical performance by voice, tap and jazz ensemble TrioNada as part of the Northside Music and Art Festival (June 11 – 14). We will also be open additional hours on June 12th as part of the Williamsburg Gallery Association Second Friday event. The public is invited to attend these events and visit the gallery during regular hours: Wed - Sun 11 AM - 7 PM, and Mon. 9 AM - 5 PM. For more information contact the gallery at 718.218.8939.

Artist Statement: My greatest desire is to reveal a deeper truth by exploring the visual experience. For many years, I have been moved by the spherical Mandala as a universal scientific and metaphysical form. Its shape echoes manifestations in our own cells, unfolding flowers or patterns in the deepest reaches of space. I am interested in naturally formed phenomena devoid of artificial boundaries and their contrast to structures like a pyramid or grid. Our lives are inherently connected to the whole of its people, its natural wonder, spirit and momentum. By magnifying the outlook of a flourishing sustainability with impending disaster, I aspire to better understand the consequences we face in our experience of modern life.

Joe Mangrum’s installations have been shared with national and international audiences. In 2008 Joe was invited to create site-specific installations for the All Points West and Mile High Music Festivals in the US. He was also selected for an International Juried Show at Viridian Artists, Inc. curated by Elisabeth Sussman of the Whitney Museum. Also while completing a residency in China, Joe created a living sculpture using air-plants titled “Retail Transmutation” at the exhibited at the Sunshine Museum in Beijing. Past accolades include the 2003 Lorenzo de Medici Award in “New Media” at the Florence Biennale for his striking piece “Fragile”. An alumnus of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Joe began his training as a painter and while traveling abroad moved toward installations of found objects. He continues to explore mediums and materials in his work.

WIlliamsburg Gallery Association, L Magazine and Northside Music and Arts Festival : The WGA is pleased to announce their groundbreaking partnership with the Northside Festival, June 11 - 14, 2009. This watershed event is the first of its kind, exposing the simmering hotbed of artistic and musical talent that Williamsburg has to offer. During the festival, the WGA will host live music and performances in the galleries, Williamsburg Every 2nd Friday extended gallery hours with an after-party at My Moon, and special summer programming on Bedford Avenue in association with Williamsburg Walks. The WGA brings the dynamic art and music of Williamsburg together in an unparalleded celebration of Brooklyn’s thriving art scene.

Ch'i Contemporary Fine Art, established in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 1999 and directed by Tracy Causey-Jeffery is committed to exhibiting vibrant contemporary art by living artists: both mid-career and emerging. Ch'i hosts 11-15 exhibitions annually with their artists coming from across America, Asia, Europe and South America.

In addition to its own exhibitions, Ch'i participates annually in at least 3 international fairs and events. In 2008, Chi participated in the annual Asian Contemporary Arts Week (NYC), the Bridge Art Fairs in New York City and Miami and the inaugural Art Asia Fair in Miami. Additionally, Ch'i and its artists have been published in Artforum, ArtNews, Block Magazine, Brooklyn Rail, Korea Times, LA Times, New York Sun, New York Times, NY Arts Magazine and The Village Voice among others. Gallery artists are included in the permanent collections of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, The Houston Museum, the Kimbell Museum, the Klutznick National Jewish Museum,The Museum of the City of New York, MoMA, and the Whitney Museum.
Ch'i director, Tracy Causey-Jeffery received her masters in art history from the University of London after interning at Sotheby's auction house in New York City. Prior to opening Ch'i, she owned and operated The Finer Side Galleries in Maryland and Washington, D.C. for 7 years.
