In collaboration with the photography exhibit by INKED KENNY (aka Kenny Lee) : SUBVERSIVE WORLDS

Douglas Kent, author of award-winning "The Better Built Bondage Book" and the forthcoming "Complete SHIBARI" series, would be giving us a glimpse in the very private world of SHIBARI.

What is SHIBARI? It's an artistic form of Japanese-style bondage that builds beautiful and elegant rope work from a small set of simple ties.

Commentary:
"The goal of shibari is not punishment, nor is it control, as many westernized D/s’ ers seem to practice. It is a mutual effort of the Dom and sub to build the best, closest relationship possible. There are no safewords used, scenes are not negotiated, and the concept of "safe, sane and consensual" is not vocalized. Instead there is an honor to be found within the Dom to respect the sub and ensure no harm comes to her in exchange for the total control she gives Him.

To many, shibari may seem extreme. Bondage and suspension can be torturous and painful. In addition, deep humiliation is often used, and the sub really is the Dom’s "object" to be used as He wishes. But this is all used to break down any false inhibitions between the sub and Dom and is never meant to be harmful. Instead, it diminishes and eventually removes any barriers between the two, forming a bond and dependence between the couple that is indescribable.

Shibari brings with it an innate respect for your partner, a desire to please, a closeness and bond I have not witnessed elsewhere. Admittedly, my experience is based on one Master, the Man who owns my soul. I don’t know if it is the same for everyone. ALLMAN, BARNHART, McCLELLAND - DENVER

The David B. Smith Gallery is proud to announce its third exhibition of the 2009 Season. This exciting show introduces two new artists to the Gallery’s collectors and friends, and welcomes back Grant Barnhart who has exhibited with us before.

Many of you may remember Grant Barnhart’s work. He challenges the viewer to engage in an exploration of the contradictions and complexities of growing up in America, and living in today’s society as an adult. He merges childhood nostalgia and American archetypes with cultural critique and satire, to induce the viewer to evaluate and understand the conflicting perspectives of American culture with the hope of a promising and forgiving future.

Ricky Allman’s work is composed of geometric landscapes pulsing with color, design, and optimism. He triumphantly creates warm and inviting scenes that generate coexistence between technology, architecture and nature. People seldom appear in Allman’s work giving a false sense of security and often leaving one to wonder the actual importance of man in this equation. He skillfully navigates the landscapes in and out of each other with the artfulness of dance and the ingenuity of a machine. His use of chromatic colors distinguished with dark and pale shades serves to further heighten the contrast and drama of his works.

The images of Niall McClelland stand in stark contrast to the color palates of his colleagues. He is a multi-disciplinary Toronto based artist with a strong material focus in his work, frequently limiting himself to a gray palette and readily available materials such as graphite, photocopies, ink and paper. McClelland has comprised a series of assembled and make shift “forgotten” flags. The illusion of folded paper, abstraction, and smudged mark making gives life to the cast aside forms. He successfully demonstrates the ability to pull these fictitious flags from ash and debris to reconstruct the forms in a new light, leaving the audience to pause about what caused the fall of these previous civilizations and the precarious rebirth of the distinct inexperienced emblems.

All three of these artists are sure to intrigue and challenge the viewer to understand the work, and the artist’s perspective. Please join us and see this unique collection of beautiful and engaging works of art.

MARY-ANNE WENSLEY - HALIFAX

Please join us for an evening with artist Mary-Anne Wensley.

Mary-Anne Wensley's "inescapable shelter" continues the Halifax artist’s intensive exploration of the material qualities of pig intestine. She has formed these delicate, translucent membranes – both exquisitely fragile and faintly repulsive – into flowers, net-like curtains and rectangular bricks from which she constructs a “safe house” structure large enough for the viewer to enter. Wensley’s 3-minute animation, "The Day of the Uteri", will also be on display near the main gallery entrance. [The ancient Greeks thought that the uterus was an animal within an animal. It didn't like to stay in its place. This animation chronicles the escape and adventures of a bunch of uteri.]

Mary-Anne Wensley's "inescapable shelter" appear at Saint Mary's University Art Gallery from 7 March through 11 April 2009. The gallery is open to the public Tuesday through Friday, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm and weekends noon to 5:00 pm. All exhibitions and associated programmes at Saint Mary's University Art Gallery receive significant support from the Canada Council for the Arts. Mary-Anne Wensley also received support from the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage.

EMERICH MEERSON - BRUXELLES

Emerich MEERSON (1), peintre français, est né à Berlin en Allemagne. Sa famille quitte très tôt ce pays pour s'installer en Bulgarie, pays d’origine du père. Il y passera son enfance et sa prime adolescence et y sera initié très tôt par une artiste peintre et sculptrice connue, à l’art du dessin par un apprentissage rigoureux de ses règles fondamentales. Cet art devient pour lui une passion qui ne le quittera jamais.

Il arrive adolescent en France et, en y suivant ses études, il découvre cette autre culture si riche de tous les mélanges. Il décide alors que sa carrière professionnelle sera entièrement vouée à la création innovatrice.

Amené par un concours de circonstances à travailler dans le domaine de l’horlogerie, Emerich Meerson révolutionnera de façon durable cette industrie par ses concepts et ses réalisations en établissant des tendances pérennes. Ses créations en joaillerie et ses lignes de montres exceptionnelles lui apporteront une célébrité mondiale. Il est ainsi invité à exposer ses collections à New York ou Los Angeles et dans les principales autres grandes villes des USA, dans tous les pays d'Europe de l'Ouest, au Japon puis jusqu’à Hong Kong et Singapour. Il est alors reconnu comme l'un des designers les plus doués de son temps.

Cette reconnaissance internationale ne l’empêchera jamais de consacrer parallèlement chaque jour un temps précieux à dessiner et à peindre. Après d’innombrables carnets de voyages, il a approfondi une technique mixte (Encre de Chine, pastels, gouache, crayon de couleur) sur papier chiffon, puis s’est tourné vers l’huile sur toile. En 1992 il décide de se dédier entièrement à la peinture. Il est à l’origine du concept de l’Art Spectral, combinaison de rythmes et de couleurs dont le nombre infini est sans rupture.

Questa serie di opere nasce con l'intenzione di rappresentare in ognuna di esse, un modulo di essere umano. Ogni soggetto è isolato e racchiuso in un fondo che lo muove come se fosse senza peso. La densità materica del fondo, metafora degli eventi che circondano l'uomo, viene sottolineata dalla superficie liscia dei corpi che, inevitabilmente, portano in sè i segni del tempo.

Pop Surrealism or Outsider Art is a wide spread populist art movement with origins in Low Brow art, underground comix, punk music, hotrod street culture, Kustum culture, Street Art, Graffiti, Graphic Design, Tattoo, Surf Culture, Tiki Culture and other California sub-cultures.

This is not a current version of Modern Pop Art. This a new movement, a new thinking in the art world. These are the artists that will inspire a new generation.

Just as artists from the expressionist, Ab-Ex and Pop Art periods their importance was unrealised until many years after they were "discovered". Most of the public has already seen these artists through their other work, ad campaigns, tshirts, album covers and graphic design.

HESSELHOLDT & MEJLVANG - ARHUS

Charlotte Fogh Contemporary kan med stor glæde præsentere Vibeke Mejlvang og Sofie Hesselholdts udstilling, ”Større horisonter i nabolaget”. Udstillingen er kunstnerduoens anden soloudstilling i galleriet, og de vil igennem nye skulpturer, tableauer og installationer tage temperaturen på det mentale klima her og nu.

På ferniseringen er der samtidigt lancering af den nye bog: ”Hesselholdt & Mejlvang - Uorden / Disorder” - en bog om de seneste par års arbejde med tekst af kunsthistoriker Inger Marie Hahn Møller. Bogen koster 100 kr. og kan købes/bestilles i galleriet.

Heykeltıraş Seçkin Pirim 3 yıl aradan sonra 6. kişisel sergisini C.A.M Galeri / Nisantasi’nda açiyor. ‘ Küllerinden Doğanlar’ başlıklı sergi, sanatçının ilk defa ele aldigi bu konuyu yine ilk kez denediği yeni formlar, yarı figüratif çalışmalarla aktarmasından oluşuyor. Kayıkla okyanusa açılıp geri dönebilmek , küllerinden yeniden varolabilmek , başka bir deyişle imkansızı başarabilmek …. Yanmış malzemeler kullanarak yaptığı insan portrelerinden duvar işleri , aslında hafif olması gereken duyguları beton kullanarak yansıttığı heykelleri sergisini oluşturan işlerden bazıları.
