New! Thursday August 13, 7Pm // Karin Olah & Jonathan BrilliantOpening: July 24th 6 - 10 PM
Karin Olah works in a manner that mimics the flow of paint from a brush through the use of fabric. Intricately cut, placed and pasted textiles are combined with gouache, acrylic and graphite to create collage paintings that are deep in color and texture. From a small-town upbringing in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, her interest in Amish quilts and textile traditions led her to study Fiber Art at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. For several years, Karin managed a textile studio in New York City where she invented color and created surface design for clients in fashion and theater trades. Now, she applies her fabric know-how to the realm of painting in Charleston where she has lived and worked since 2003. Her paintings have been featured in American Contemporary Art, Art Business News, Charleston Style & Design and Charleston Magazine and on the covers of Carolina Arts and Black & White: Birmingham’s City Paper. She is represented by ML GALLERY in Charleston, SC.
Jonathan Brilliant describes himself as a Southern Has-Been and a British Wanna-Be. He was born in 1976 in Charleston, SC. Brilliant holds a BA in Studio Art from the College of Charleston and an MFA in Spatial Arts from San Jose State University. He has exhibited his work in several group and solo exhibitions nationally, most recently at The Dam, Stuhltrager Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. He has received numerous fellowships to artist residencies and communities including: The Vermont Studio Center, The Ox-Bow School of Art, The Penland School of Crafts, The Sumter Accessibility program and Redux Contemporary Art Center. In 2008 a panel of distinguished jurors, including senior curators from the Whitney Museum, San Francisco MOMA, and The Bridge Art Fair, awarded him the myartspace.com Bridge Art Fair emerging artist prize. His work is a synthesis of the Southern craft based approach to object making and the late-1970s British methods of installation. He currently lives and works in SC with his wife, Brooke, and their cat, Zero.
