Launched in 1993 by the Hellenic Art Galleries Association, Art-Athina stands today as one of the longest - lasting contemporary art fairs in Europe, attracting over 10.000 visitors annually. Art Athina has witnessed a burgeoning growth in the number of art collectors, art dealers, curators, artists, critics and other art enthusiasts from around the world visiting the event, establishing Athens’ reputation as a vigorous, vibrant art scene.
ART-ATHINA 2009. NEW MANAGEMENT & VENUE
Art-Athina 2009 will run under new management by D-ART. The fair will welcome a showcase of selected international galleries, a wide range of international collectors and art professionals through the VIP guest programme, distinct parallel events, talks, exhibitions and art projects. Newly located next to the seashore in the Faliro Bay, Art Athina presents a unique opportunity to discover and enjoy international contemporary art in Greece.

PARTNERSHIPS WITH ART DUBAI & ART ROTTERDAM
Art Athina is pleased to announce a reciprocal patrons’ programme with Art Dubai and Art Rotterdam in 2009. Art Rotterdam will welcome a number of Greek collectors in February and a group of collectors from Holland will be hosted in Athens in May. The partnership with Art Dubai will bring collectors and art lovers from Greece to the third edition of Art Dubai to be held in March, whilst their counterparts from the Gulf states will be invited to Art Athina. Emphasising the strong links that exist between Greece and the UAE, Art Dubai will also be inviting a number of prominent Greek curators and art benefactors to speak at the Global Art Forum about the numerous contemporary art projects now underway in Greece.
PARALLEL EVENTSThe exhibition “In Praise of Shadows” curated by Paolo Colombo and presented at the
Benaki Museum (22/05-26/07/2009) is included in the parallel programme of ART-ATHINA
2009. The exhibition is a co-production of the Benaki Museum, the Irish Museum of ModernArt , and Ιstanbul Modern, with the support of the Culture Programme of the European Union.
The exhibition explores the parallels between the traditions of shadow theatre and the new narrative spirit in contemporary art bringing together works and films by Haluk Akakçe (Turkey), Nathalie Djurberg (Sweden), William Kentridge (South Africa), Katariina Lillqvist (Finland), Jockum Nordström (Sweden), Lotte Reiniger (Germany), Christiana Soulou (Greece), Ladislas Starewitch (Poland), Andrew Vickery (Great Britain) and Kara Walker (U.S.A.).
