TARIQ ALVI - LONDON

Preview: Thursday 10 September 2009, 6:30 - 8:30pm

Exhibition continues: 11 September - 25 October 2009

Please join us at Chisenhale Gallery for the opening of our next show, 'The Meaning', an exhibition of new works by British artist Tariq Alvi.

Working intuitively, recycling and re-contextualizing found printed matter from newspapers and magazine advertising, Alvi’s labour-intensive works present us with both disarmingly simple and complex aesthetic forms that reflect upon contemporary society. For his Chisenhale Gallery exhibition Alvi presents a group of sculptures, paintings and collages that meditate on the relationships between economy, desire and materiality.

***Chisenhale Gallery will be open late Saturday October 17th, 2009 until 9pm for a special Frieze viewing of Tariq Alvi's exhibition, 'The Meaning'. Drinks will be served from 6-9pm.

CERRADO - MONTRÉAL

Vernissage/openning CERRADO

Born in central Brazil in the 1960’s.

Started painting as well as copying impressionist works, Renoir in particular, in the 1970’s.

Obtained degree in architecture in the 1980’s (Federal University of Minas Gerais – Belo Horizonte) and has a first encounter with the practice and theory of Depth Psychology (C.G. Jung in particular).

Completed a Master’s Degree in the History and Theory of Architecture in the 1990’s (McGill University – Montreal). Thesis investigates the relationship of early abstract art (Malevich’s Suprematism) to architecture (see under “writings”).

Independent, sustained study of the complete works of C.G. Jung and closely related psychologists (J. Hillman, M.L. von Franz, J. Campbell).

LIVING ROOM - BRISTOL

You and your guest are invited to attend a private view.

On Friday 4th September 7.00 PM - 9.00 PM at Knifesmith Gallery,11 Christmas steps Bristol BS1 5BS.

Khanage

Khanage now lives in her own fantasy world full of creatures, dreams and romance which she expresses through her work. There are no limits with her ideas or her medium and she is constantly searching for the next story within her life to connect to her art.

Rose Sanderson

Roses work is inspired by the world around her, especially that which is generally un-noticed or disregarded by others, seeing beauty in the seemingly ugly. Influences include insects and strange creatures, natural history, anatomy and sea life. She works mainly with mixed media, acrylics, ink, graphite and coloured pencil and aims to produce pieces that are intriguing, fresh and provocative.

Connie Reeves

Connie has a particular interest in traditional and dying crafts and methods, which she inherited from childhood and continued to build upon this craftsmanship within her art practice. She says of her work “When I work with taxidermy I am reminded of natures order, preservation, respect and the spectacle of natural beauty and its death. I am constantly amazed by anatomy and the process of bringing the dead back to life.” She has studied for the last 4 years alongside renowned Master taxidermist Mark Winston-Smith, is now a member of the National Guild of Taxidermists and has worked with Exeter and Tenby Museum on a number of projects.

Hope you can make it.

EVAN HECOX - NEW YORK

Evan Hecox is a Colorado-based artist and designer whose work portrays the essence of urban environments. His work depicts city scenes or isolated elements that are almost cinematic in their stark contrast and abstraction. Hecox is fascinated with the complexity of the urban landscape and people from the mundane surroundings that one would normally overlook. Like snapshots or filmstrips, his art captures the everyday existence of the average person as they traverse the detritus of the modern metropolis. His stylistic approach is based on the process of amplification as it affects form and color, breaking down the image, removing elements and emphasizing others. Hecox has exhibited worldwide, including exhibitions in Los Angeles, London and Tokyo.
