Cecilia Canziani e prodotta da The Gallery Apart, Mariana Ferratto presenta la videoinstallazione I pesci rossi crescono in base alla dimensione del loro acquario, significativamente allestita nei sotterranei della Fondazione stessa.
I pesci rossi crescono in base alla dimensione del loro acquario restituisce la complessità dei rapporti sociali resi attraverso la relazione di un corpo con lo spazio circostante. In questa installazione video a quattro canali, tre personaggi di dimensioni molto diverse occupano ciascuno una inquadratura, abitano una stanza che corrisponde alla loro scala nella quale compiono le stesse semplici azioni: spogliarsi, leggere, mettersi a letto. Si incontrano solo in un momento, conversando in una lingua la cui comprensione ci è negata e condividendo un pasto.
Per la realizzazione di questo ultimo video, l’artista ha lavorato per la prima volta con una troupe e con degli attori, passando dal ruolo di interprete a quello di regista.
L’occhio dell’artista è esterno, il soggetto di Mariana Ferratto in questo lavoro non è la memoria e l’identità, come in Senza titolo (2007) o Facciamo un gioco (2006) o una indagine operata su se stessa e sul proprio lavoro di artista Autoritratto (2006) e Scaldami proteggimi (2006). I pesci rossi crescono in base alla dimensione del loro acquario è quasi un documentario scientifico, una prova di un postulato o di una teoria. I tre personaggi sono osservati dalla telecamera nel loro habitat, la macchina da presa li segue da vicino, ne registra le abitudini, senza offrire altro che l’evidenza del loro muoversi nello spazio.
I diversi momenti e le diverse storie si sovrappongono, ma non costruiscono una narrazione che ha un inizio e una fine. E’ piuttosto un ciclo vitale che si svolge tra spazi privati e condivisi, e le quattro scene seguono un loro tempo, incontrandosi solo a volte, secondo una sequenza temporale imposta dall’artista.

Purple Press, accompagna il video. Non lo illustra. E’ un contrappunto, un gioco o di nuovo un esperimento scientifico, a cui sono state invitate a partecipare quattro persone scelte tra curatori, critici e artisti, alle quali è stato inviata un’immagine di scena e una parte dello storyboard dalle quali hanno immaginato una possibile trama.
Come lo storyboard riprodotto nel libro non è la traccia fedele del video finale, ma una sua possibile versione, così i testi affidati a
Cecilia Casorati, Anna Cestelli Guidi,
Liliana Moro e
Kristine Siegel non vogliono essere testi critici, ma cinque tentativi di costruire una storia a partire da un elemento in comune – la fotografia dei tre personaggi – e da spunti diversi e quasi indecifrabili – alcune pagine dello storyboard originale.
Dal 3 aprile al 4 maggio 2009 Mariana Ferratto sarà presente a Roma anche con la mostra Inside #4 presso The Gallery Apart, in via della Barchetta 11, dove presenterà la videoanimazione Nascondino.
Mariana Ferratto presents her solo exhibit I pesci rossi crescono in base alla dimensione del loro acquario (The red fish grow in relation to the size of their aquarium) at the Adriano Olivetti Foundation. The exhibition, curated by Cecilia Canziani and produced by The Gallery Apart, consists of a video installation set in the Foundation’s basement.
I pesci rossi crescono in base alla dimensione del loro acquario brings out the complexity of social relationships created through the relation between the body and the space around it. In this four-channel video installation, three characters of very different stature each occupy a frame. They live in a room that corresponds to their physical scale where they carry out simple actions like getting undressed, reading and going to bed. They meet each other only for a moment, to share a meal, and to speak in a language that the viewer does not understand.
In the making of this video, the artist worked for the first time with a crew and actors, moving from the role of interpreter to that of director.
The artist’s viewpoint is external in this work. Mariana Ferratto’s subjects are not memories and identity, like in her previous videos Senza titolo (2007) or Facciamo un gioco (2006). Nor is the new video an internal search into herself and her work like in Autoritratto (2006) and Scaldami proteggimi (2006). Rather I pesci rossi crescono in base alla dimensione del loro acquario is almost a scientific documentary, a test of a postulate or of a theory. The three characters are observed by the camera in their habitats, it follows them closely and records their habits, without offering anything but the evidence of their movements in space.
The different movements and the different stories overlap, but they do not constitute a narration that has a beginning and an end. It is more like a life cycle that is carried out in private and shared spaces. The four scenes follow their own rhythm, meeting only occasionally following a timed sequence chosen by the artist.

Rather it is a counterpoint, a game or, as already mentioned, a scientific experiment in which five persons were invited to participate including curators, critics and artists. These persons received a picture of a scene and a part of a storyboard. They then had to imagine the rest of the story.
As the storyboard reproduced in the book is not faithful to the one in the video, rather it is only a possible version, in this same way the writings of Cecilia Casorati, Anna Cestelli Guidi, Liliana Moro and Kristine Siegel are not meant to be critiques. Rather they are five attempts to construct a story beginning with a common element – the photograph of the three persons – and different hints which are almost indecipherable – a few pages of the original storyboard.
From April 3 –May 4, 2009, Mariana Ferratto will also be in Rome with another work, the video installation Nascondino. It will be shown at Inside #4 at The Gallery Apart, Via della Barchetta 11.

Pour sa onzième participation à Artparis, la galerie Lélia Mordoch continue de mettre en avant les artistes du GRAV –faisant notamment suite aux installations de néons de François Morellet présentées en 2006, et aux boîtes à lumière instable de Horacio Garcia Rossi en 2007- en proposant cette année un one-man show de Julio Le parc. De dominante noir et blanc, le stand sera composé de pièces historiques non lumineuses : mobiles, reliefs et machines interactives joueront de la distorsion et du mouvement.
